Methods and systems for processing Ethernet data are disclosed and may comprise receiving packetized data by an Ethernet switch integrated within a single gigabit Ethernet IP phone chip. A first portion of the received packetized data may be switched within the single gigabit Ethernet IP phone chip, between a first on-chip port that routes data internally for processing within the single gigabit Ethernet IP phone chip and a second on-chip port that routes data externally for off-chip processing. The packetized data may be received by a 10/100Base Ethernet physical interface transceiver (PHY) integrated within the single gigabit Ethernet IP phone chip. The packetized data may be received by a gigabit Ethernet PHY. The received packetized data may be communicated from the gigabit Ethernet PHY to the Ethernet switch integrated within the single gigabit Ethernet IP phone chip for switching.

The present invention governs the order of destination nodes to which each node will send by establishing an individual circular output routing scheme for each node based on that node's unique identifier, thereby evenly distributing node traffic. The output routing scheme for each node can begin with the next incrementally higher node identifier. The output routing scheme can be built by incrementing the node identifiers until the highest node identifier is reached. The lowest node identifier follows the highest node identifier. Then, the node identifiers are again incremented until the sending node's identifier is reached. Each node can iteratively follow its own output routing scheme.

An Ethernet virtual switched sub-network (VSS) is implemented as a virtual hub and spoke architecture overlaid on hub and spoke connectivity built of a combination of Provider Backbone Transport (spokes) and a provider backbone bridged sub-network (hub). Multiple VSS instances are multiplexed over top of the PBT/PBB infrastructure. A loop free resilient Ethernet carrier network is provided by interconnecting Provider Edge nodes through access sub-networks to Provider Tandems to form Provider Backbone Transports spokes with a distributed switch architecture of the Provider Backbone Bridged hub sub-network. Provider Backbone transport protection groups may be formed from the Provider Edge to diversely homed Provider Tandems by defining working and protection trunks through the access sub-network. The Provider Backbone Transport trunks are Media Access Control (MAC) addressable by the associated Provider Edge address or by a unique address associated with the protection group in the Provider Backbone Bridged network domain.
