Enhanced reception in a communication system is achieved by performing radio synchronization (SYNC) detection after multipath signal components are combined via a Rake combiner. In a communication system comprising a transmitter and a receiver, plural multipath signal components of a signal transmitted by the transmitter are received by the receiver. The plural multipath signal components are correlated with a known spreading code (e.g. a PN code). The correlated multipath signals are analyzed to identify plural correlation peaks and those correlation peaks that exceed a multipath threshold are selected. The selected correlation peaks are combined (i.e., coherently combined) to produce a combined signal. A synchronization event is declared when the combined signal exceeds an adjusted synchronization threshold and the combined signal is then decoded.

The channel vector estimating section 181 estimates channel vectors in a method such as a method in which the section 181 multiplies, according to the multipath timings sent from the multipath timing detecting section, the input signal from the base-station receiving section by a complex conjugate of a known pilot signal to average the input signal (to average the input signal by de-spreading the pilot signal in the case of CDMA). The noise estimating section 182 estimates noise power using received signals and generates a Channel matrix by arranging the estimated channel vectors according to the multipath timings. In the timing correcting device, a RAKE path detecting circuit 1 detects a plurality of path candidates to be tracked, from a reception signal, and outputs a "timing of a path" and a "detection correlation value" corresponding to each path candidate, as a result of the detection. Next, each tracking-path candidate deciding circuit (2a, 2b, 2c, ...) generates a predetermined decision standard that is necessary for selecting an optimum path timing from timings of the path candidates, based on an individually allocated result of the detection. Further, the tracking-path selecting circuit 3 selects a timing of an optimum path to be tracked, based on the result of the detection and the predetermined decision standards. Then, a comparator circuit 5 compares a predetermined reception reference timing given from the outside with the optimum path timing, and calculates a phase difference between the two. Last, the timing correction control circuit 6 controls a clock based on the phase difference, thereby to correct the reception reference timing.
