A mobile station supporting selective transmit diversity (STD) efficiently transmits forward channel status information to a base station in a 1xEV-DV mobile communication system. The mobile station receives signals transmitted from the base station through a plurality of transmission antennas, measures signal strengths of the received signals, compares the measured signal strengths after compensating for a transmission power difference between the transmission antennas, and selects a transmission antenna having the highest signal strength. The mobile station transmits forward channel status information indicating measured signal strength for a signal transmitted from the selected transmission antenna to the base station along with antenna selection information indicating the selected transmission antenna. The forward channel status information includes absolute status information representing measured signal strength for a transmission antenna selected at a current time interval, or relative status information representing a result obtained by comparing the measured signal strength for the transmission antenna selected at the current time interval with measured signal strength for a transmission antenna selected at a previous time interval.

A base station apparatus for controlling power of individual control information transmitted to mobile stations. A first mobile station receives its own control information, and a second mobile station receives its own control information and control information for the first mobile station. A receiver receives information on forward channel conditions of the mobile stations for a previous time period. A channel transmitter transmits individual control information to the first mobile station and the second mobile station for a preset time period. A required transmission power calculator calculates power levels required for transmitting control information to each of the mobile stations for the preset time period taking into consideration the forward channel condition of each of the mobile stations and transmission power used for transmitting control information to each of the mobile stations for the previous time period. A transmission power controller transmits control information for the first mobile station at a higher power level out of the calculated required power levels and transmits control information for the second mobile station at a corresponding power level out of the calculated required power levels.

The apparatus includes a first processor for generating a Modulation Signaling Sequence (MSS) using a plurality of received sequences, and for outputting a modulated sequence by differentially modulating the MSS. A method and apparatus for transmitting a control channel in a base station for a wireless communication system. The base station transmits information on a number of channel elements constituting control channels, to a terminal; establishes a set of control channels that the terminal can receive, within the number of channel elements using an identifier (ID) of the terminal; and transmits control information to the terminal through a selected control channel among the control channels. The terminal is restricted to monitor only a proper number of control channels established without the need to monitor all control channels, thereby reducing reception complexity and avoiding unnecessary battery consumption.
