Non liquid-crystalline esterphenol-capped liquid polymer and polyol compositions in combination with an amino crosslinking agent endow coating compositions containing them with the ability of providing films having superior properties. The esterphenol-capped polymers and polyols can be prepared by direct esterification of hydroxybenzoic acid without its decarboxylation.

A thermosetting composition (A) a hydroxyl group-containing resin, (B) an alkoxysilane group-containing copolymer and (C) a curing catalyst. The film of the composition is excellent in not only adhesion, gel percentage and surface hardness but also solvent resistance, acid resistance, and stain resistance.

Beschrieben wird eine wärmehärtbare Beschichtungsmasse, enthaltend als Bindemittel (A) filmbildende hydroxylgruppenhaltige Verbindungen mit einer Hydroxylfunktionalität von mindestens 2 und damit vermischt einen acetalfunktionellen Vernetzer (B), die dadurch gekennzeichnet ist, dass der acetalfunktionelle Vernetzer (B) ein nicht flüchtiges Acetalvernetzerharz ist, erhältlich entweder durch Umsetzung eines Diacetals mit Acetalalkoxygruppen von 1 bis 4 Kohlenstoffatomen mit einem Dialkohol oder durch Umsetzung einer isocyanatterminierten Verbindung mit einem hydroxylfunktionellen Acetal. Beschrieben wird auch die Verwendung der Beschichtungsmasse und der darin enthaltenen Acetalvernetzerharze zur Herstellung von Lacküberzügen.

his invention relates to a coating agent capable of forming film removable in water which is applied to, for example, articles which tend to become dirt, e.g., ventilator fans used in kitchens of homes. The coating agent contains a cross-linkable polymer which, atthe time of being crosslinked, is water-insoluble and capable of absorbing water by an amount which is 2 to 200 times as large as the weight of the polymer itself. The cross-linkable polymer may be a hydrophilic polymer which has, as the hydrophilic group, carboxyl groups (carboxylate groups) and/or hydroxyl groups, and a cross-linking agent.

A coating composition which comprises. preferably as an aqueous dispersion of cationically, anionically or non-ionically dispersed particles - (a) a hydroxyl group-containing polymeric modifier, e.g. a polyepoxide resin or a modified polyepoxide resin, (b) a hydroxyl group-containing addition copolymer containing monomer residues of a specified hydroxyl group-containing ester of an ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid and, preferably, (c) a crosslinking agent for (a) and (b). Cationically stabilised particles are particularly suitable for cathodic electrodeposition from an aqueous medium when the polymeric modifier is an amine-polyepoxide reaction product.

The invention provides an aqueous coating composition curable at ambient temperature comprising a compound having at least 2α,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylate groups, a polyamino amide having an amine number of 60-1000, and a nitroalkane, a formic acid ester or an organic compound occurring in at least 2 tautomeric forms, and in one of the tautomeric forms a labile hydrogen atom is linked to a carbon atom. A process of coating a substrate with such composition is also provided.

A new transesterification catalyst comprises an epoxide and a non-acidic nucleophilic onium salt. Coating compositions having hydroxyl functional resin components and carboxylic ester components adapted for curing by transesterification following application to a substrate are formulated with in-situ formed cure catalyst comprising a non-acidic nucleophile and an epoxide-to-product coatings that readily cure by transesterification. Such coatings include polyesters, polyepoxides, and polyacrylates are useful in formulating high solids coating and powder coatings having exceptional physical properties. Extremely low-temperature cure coatings were obtained by transesterifying mixtures of polyols and polymeric esters having multiple activated ester linkages having the structure wherein Rʹ is lower alkyl and Y is -OH and O-alkyl radicals. These coatings provide low-temperature cure coatings for paper, plastic, and wood in addition to metal substrates. Such catalysts can be used in powder coatings compositions which comprise a hydroxyl functional binder having carboxylic ester functionality. Such resins include hydroxyl functional acrylic, hydroxyl functional polyester, ester functional polyesters and methyl succinate esters of bis phenol epoxides.

La flexibilite et la longevite d'une couche transparente dans un systeme de revetement en couleur/transparent peuvent etre ameliorees en utilisant une resine acrylique contenant un anhydride phtalique que l'on fait reagir avec un ester de glycidyle.

A composition suitable for forming surface coatings, laminates or composite materials formed by bringing together:
(a) a first polymer containing carboxylic acid, anhydride or acid chloride groups, (b) an amine or alcohol or a derivative thereof which is a tertiary amine, a ketimine, an acetal or an oxazolidine and (c) a second polymer capable of cross-linking with the first polymer in the presence of the amine or alcohol.
The components may be initially in two packs and either mixed prior to application or sprayed onto the surface simultaneously from separate nozzles. The surface coatings are particularly suitable for coating surfaces which are otherwise difficult to coat and protect and may be applied to wet or rusted surfaces without surface preparation.

A coating composition comprises a hydroxy component having at least two free hydroxyl groups per molecule and an anhydride component which is a polymer-containing cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride groups derived from an olefinically unsaturated cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride, the two components being packaged separately during storage of the composition and being compatible on mixing. At least one of the components is a film-forming polymer. The composition includes a catalytically effective amount of amine groups for accelerating the curing reaction between the hydroxyl groups and the anhydride groups. The amine groups are present in the molecule of the hydroxy component or in a separate amine compound. The hydroxy component is preferably a film-forming acrylic copolymer having pendent hydroxyl and dialkyl-amino-alkyl groups. The composition is particularly useful as a glossy pigmented coating for rigid substrates such as vehicle bodies where hardening of the coating at ambient temperature is required.
