a. forming a cellulosic furnish containing from 0.01 to 1.5% by weight cellulosic fiber; b. adding to the furnish:
(i) from 0.00005 to 1.25% by weight, based on the dry weight of fiber in the furnish, of a borosilicate having a mole ratio of boron to silicon of from 1:1000 to 100:1, a mole ratio of alkali metal to silicon of from 6:1000 to 1.04:1, a particle size of from 1 to 2000 nm; and a surface area of from 15 to 3000 m 2 /g; and, (ii) from 0.001 to 0.5% by weight, based on the dry weight of fiber in the furnish of a substantially water soluble polymeric flocculant having a molecular weight greater than 500,000 daltons; and then,

Methods of making paper or paperboard are described. According to one method, fibrous cationic colloidal alumina microparticles and a polymer are introduced to a papermaking pulp to form a treated pulp having improved retention properties. The fibrous cationic colloidal alumina microparticles are preferably a fibrous cationic acetate salt of boehmite alumina having a zeta potential of greater than about 25 and a weight ratio of alumina to acetate of less than about 4. The polymer can be a cationic polymer, a nonionic polymer, an amphoteric polymer under cationic conditions, or combinations thereof. The pulp may also be treated with at least one coagulant, at least one flocculant, at least one cationic starch, at least one cellulytic enzyme, and/or other conventional papermaking pulp additives. The resulting pulp is formed into a sheet of pulp and then drained to form a paper or paperboard. Other papermaking processes are also described as is a papermaking apparatus for carrying out the methods. Paper and paperboard containing dried pulp that has been treated with fibrous cationic colloidal alumina microparticles and polymer are also described.

The invention relates to an aqueous silica-based sol comprising a nitrogen-containing organic compound and silica-based particles with a specific surface area of at least 300 square meters per gram of silica. The invention further relates to a process for the production of an aqueous silica-based sol comprising a nitrogen-containing organic compound which comprises incorporating a nitrogen-containing organic compound into a silica-based sol containing silica-based particles with a specific surface area of at least 300 square meters per gram of silica. The invention also relates to the use of an aqueous silica-based sol comprising a nitrogen-containing organic compound and silica-based particles with a specific surface area of at least 300 square meters per gram of silica as a flocculating agent in the production of pulp and paper and in water purification. The invention further relates to a process for the production of paper from an aqueous suspension containing cellulosic fibres, and optional fillers, which comprises adding to the suspension (i) an aqueous silica-based sol comprising an organic nitrogen-containing compound and (ii) at least one charged organic polymer, forming and draining the suspension on a wire.
