A radio having a transmitter, a receiver, and a loop-back circuit is provided. The loop-back circuit, when engaged, feeds a transmission from the transmitter to the receiver. According to an embodiment of the invention, the loop-back circuit utilises at least one electronic component that is also used by the transmitter or the receiver. This can reduce a number of electronic components of the radio. The at least one electronic component might for example include a mixer and/or an oscillator. The mixer generates a mixer output by mixing a signal from the oscillator with the transmission from the transmitter. The loop-back circuit provides the mixer output to the receiver when the loop-back circuit is engaged. In specific implementations, both the mixer and the oscillator are used by the transmitter.

A wireless communications system employing code-division multiple access information transmission techniques includes a transmission facility having ground-based transmission and reception electronic equipment, a remotely located RF power amplifier, an antenna, and an RF cable connecting the ground-based equipment with the remotely located RF power amplifier. Power level detectors in the ground-based equipment and in the remotely located RF power amplifier measure the signal level at each end of the RF cable. A microcontroller compares these measurements and adjusts a variable attenuator in the transmission signal path and a variable attenuator in the received signal path to compensate for signal level variability due to variations in signal loss.

A loopback module includes a plurality of signal paths and is designed to mix an incoming phone signal with a signal from a signal generator to produce a loopback signal at the receive frequency of the phone. The loopback signal is applied to the phone's antenna. The phone then evaluates the loopback signal to determine the appropriate offset for the transmitter chain at that frequency and power level. This process is iterated until the desired number of frequencies and power levels are tested for proper calibration. The offsets are stored in memory for later use by the phone.

A detector (3) detects the envelope of an radio frequency signal whose power level may change depending on the time slot. A filter (7) narrows the pass band in the data field of each time slot and broadens it in the transition field of the same. The output of the detector (3) is applied to the filter (7). The detecting circuit, therefore, produces an output which is smoothed in the data field without regard to the content of data and which responds to a change in the power level sharply in the transition field.
