A modular nuclear fuel assembly rack (10) is constructed of an array of identical cells (11A, 11B, 11C, 11D), each cell being constructed of a plurality of identical flanged plates (20, 30, 40, 50). The assembly of the plates into a rigid rack provides cellular compartments (12) for nuclear fuel assemblies and cavities (16) between the cells for acceoting neutron absorbing material (14) thus allowing a closely spaced array. The modular rack size can be easily adapted to conform with available storage space.
