The invention relates to a method for operating an optical transmission line with several optical transmission channels for communication of several optical transmitters with several optical receivers using different wavelengths, where to each optical receiver an optical transmission channel is assigned, wherein to each transmission channel a set of different wavelengths is assigned, wherein each wavelength is assigned to one set of different wavelength only, wherein the wavelengths of each set of wavelengths are spread over an area of wavelength commonly permitted to all sets of wavelengths, wherein to each optical receiver is assigned a set of optical filters that pass the wavelengths of one set of wavelengths, and wherein each optical transmitter chooses a wavelengths from the set of wavelengths assigned to it that is usable for it with small effort, where assigning a set of wavelengths; choosing one wavelength out ot the assigned set of wavelengths or fine tuning the chosen wavelength is performed in protocolar interaction between either of the optical transmitters terminating the involved transmission channel and the optical receiver terminating the involved transmission channel as well as to an optical transmission system, an optical transmitter and an optical receiver.

Proposed is a method of determining a difference between optical transmission delays. A sequence of values equal to output values of a transmission linear feedback shift register is provided. First consecutive values of the sequence are transmitted into a first optical transmission line. Second consecutive values of the sequence are transmitted into a second optical transmission line. A difference between the transmission delays is determined, using the received subsets.

It is disclosed a method for data transmission in an optical transport network, comprising the steps of - receiving client data from a client, - mapping said client data into a frame structure (ODU-flex), - mapping said frame structure (ODU-flex) into tributary slots (TS) of a data transport structure (HO-ODU), - transmitting said data transport structure (HO-ODU), wherein said data transport structure (HO-ODU) contains a fixed number of tributary slots (TS), and wherein the size of said frame structure (ODU-flex) is selectable in granularity of said tributary slots (TS) of said data transport structure (HO-ODU).
