The advancing mass (6) of cigarettes is parted at an intermediate zone (18) of the duct (5) either by rods (62) or by rods (62) or by a pair of frames (68), in such a way as to create a void that will accommodate a trolley (28) directed into the duct (5) from a housing (27) by an elevator (59); once inside the duct (5), the trolley (28) proceeds to push the mass (6) of cigarettes (3) from the intermediate zone (18) toward the inlet (12) of a hopper (13) in such a way as to empty the duct (5) completely, for example when changing over from one brand of cigarette (3) to another. To advantage, the trolley (28) is composed of two articulated structures (29) so that its geometry and dimensions can be varied to match the variations in geometry and depth of the duct (5).
