A process by which a high-quality and high-performance aromatic polycarbonate having no color and excellent mechanical properties can be stably produced for long from a molten prepolymer of an aromatic polycarbonate obtained from an aromatic dihydroxy compound and a diaryl carbonate, on an industrial scale of 1-50 tons per hour without using a large amount of an inert gas. The process, which is for producing an aromatic polycarbonate by the melt method, comprises absorbing a specific amount of an inert gas into a molten prepolymer of an aromatic polycarbonate obtained by the reaction of an aromatic dihydroxy compound with a diaryl carbonate and then polymerizing the prepolymer with a polymerizer of the guide contact flowing-down type having a specific structure. Thus, a high-quality and high-performance aromatic polycarbonate having no color and excellent mechanical properties can be stably produced on an industrial scale at an output of 1-50 tons per hour over a period as long as several thousands of hours, e.g., 5,000 hours, without causing fluctuations in molecular weight, etc.
