摘要: Systems and methods for storing high level waste below grade that affords adequate ventilation of the high level waste storage cavity. In one aspect, the invention is a system comprising: a cavity for receiving and storing a high level waste canister, a major portion of the cavity positioned below grade; at least one inlet ventilation duct extending from an above grade inlet to a below grade outlet into the cavity. In another aspect the invention is a system comprising: a body having a cavity for receiving a canister; an inlet ventilation duct forming a passageway from an ambient air inlet to an outlet into the cavity; and at least one support for supporting a canister in the cavity so that a bottom surface of the canister is lower than a top of the outlet. In other aspects, the invention is a method of storing high level waste canister using the systems.

摘要: The present invention relates to a method and a device for fuel handling in a nuclear power plant of pressurized-water type comprising at least one fuel assembly (1) with a top part (5) and a bottom part (6), in its turn comprising a plurality of fuel rods (2). The fuel handling comprises extracting the fuel rods (2) in their entirety, or parts thereof, from the substantially vertically arranged fuel assembly (1) from above, either through the top part (5) of the fuel assembly (1) or through the bottom part (6) thereof. The fuel rods (2) extracted from the fuel assembly (1) are arranged to be turnable through 180° around a transverse axis (t) by arranging them in a normally vertically arranged turnable rod magazine (16).

摘要: A store for radioactive material housed in transportable stillages (30) comprises a walled structure providing cells (26) closed at the top thereof by floor slabs (36) which are removable to provide access openings for the stillages. The stillages are a close sliding fit in vertical guide rails on the side walls (20, 21) of the cells. The cells are arranged in parallel rows and the side walls (20, 21) of each row of cells are fitted with rails for a carriage for transporting the stillages. The carriage comprises a shield hood fitted with separate lifting mechanisms for a floor slab and a stillage, the shield hood being large enough to span two adjacent floor slabs of a cell and to accommodate a floor slab and a stillage side by side. The walls, floor slabs and shield hood have shielding properties sufficient to prevent escape of radiation therethrough, and the lower edge of the shield hood is spaced with small clearance from the top surfaces of the floor slabs and cell walls. The structure is designed to maintain its integrity under a seismic load not less than that equivalent to a horizontal ground acceleration of 0.25g.

摘要: A structure for the storage of core assemblies (12) from a liquid metal-cooled nuclear reactor. The structure comprises an enclosed housing having a substantially flat horizontal top plate (48), a bottom plate (50) and substantially vertical wall members (52) extending therebetween. A plurality of thimble members (54) extend downwardly through the top plate. Each thimble member is closed at its bottom end and has an open end adjacent said top plate. Each thimble member has a length and diameter greater than that of the core assembly (64) to be stored therein. The housing is provided with an inlet duct (56) for the admission of cooling air and an exhaust (58) duct for the discharge of air therefrom, such that when hot core assemblies are placed in the thimbles, the heat generated will by convection cause air to flow from the inlet duct around the thimbles and out the exhaust duct maintaining the core assemblies at a safe temperature without the necessity of auxiliary powered cooling equipment.
