A plurality of examples to realize the invention are described.

These characteristics may include, e.g., the kind of medium, the kind of data, the way the data is segmented or separated, the size of any data segments, the total amount of data or physical size of the medium carrying the data. A controller then compares the identified set of characteristics to stored sets of characteristics which are associated with respective content-identifiers. A successful comparison yields content-identifiers applicable to the data stored on the pre-recorded medium. These content identifiers may be, e.g., information identifying the titles and length of audio or video programs included on the media. The stored sets of characteristic and content identifiers may be located at aremote site.

A voltage source (RAW B+), a transformer (T1) and a switching controller (U1) are coupled for switched mode generation of a regulated output supply voltage. A switching circuit (R5, R6, R7, Q3, Q4, Z3, U3) responsive to an on/off signal (+23 V-RUN) turns the power supply on and off by establishing a conductive condition in a conductive path. A fault detector (42) establishes a non-conductive condition in a part of the conduction path responsive to an overload condition. A delay circuit (40) establishes a conductive condition in an auxiliary conduction path for a period of time after the power supply is turned on. The auxiliary conduction path becomes non-conductive when the fault detector establishes a conductive condition in the part of the conduction path. The part of the conduction path remains conductive absent an overload condition. A latch arrangement including the delay circuit maintains the non-conductive condition in the auxiliary conduction path until the power supply is turned off.

Once the type of photodiode circuit has been identified by applying a current to it (44) and evaluating a voltage occuring at an input of the detection circuit (45) the photodetection circuit adapts itself to it, e.g. a reverse biasing voltage is / isn't applied (48) to the photodiode of the photodiode circuit. The result is a photodiode detection circuit which uses a forward or a reversed biased photodiode. The photodiode detection circuit is now in a state to measure light falling on the photodiode. The detection circuit may be part of a light intensity monitoring and controlling circuit which allows to regulate the intensity of a laser beam in an optical disk reading / recording device.

The correction circuit causes a decrease in a maximum duty cycle of a control signal (VOUT) when the input supply voltage increases and is still smaller than a predetermined magnitude. A zener diode (Z1) limits the input supply voltage indicative signal in a manner to prevent a further decrease in the duty cycle when the input supply voltage exceeds the predetermined magnitude.

Each block also includes a pointer to a next block in the sequence. A signal combiner (20) combines the background image representative signal and the OSD image represntative signal.

A cathode ray tube may utilize a focus mask color-selection structure. The focus mask structure is susceptible to localized, transient short circuit events, or breakdown events. These events may be caused by conductive particulates that become free within the cathode ray tube and provide a short circuit between first and second layers of the focus mask. The breakdown events are undesirable because they may result in cross-strand currents causing mask strand magnetization that can interfere with a video image on the screen of the cathode ray tube. A rapid degaussing operation is initiated during the next subsequent vertical blanking period following detection of the breakdown event.
