摘要:
A droplet generator for generating a plurality of streams of ink droplets in a continuous ink jet printer comprises a stimulator plate (66) and means (60) for supplying ink to the stimulator plate (66). The stimulator plate (66) is substantially planar and comprises a substrate (68), a flexible membrane (74) having a line of nozzles (75) and actuator means (78) for vibrating the membrane (74) at a resonant frequency. During use, a standing wave is generated such that the line of nozzles (75) is positioned on a locus of uniform vibrational amplitude.

A method is provided for creating complex document layouts with variable data. The document layouts are placed on a web template associated with a high speed printing system. A merged data stream is generated, containing fixed and variable data as input job data, and is output on the high speed printing system. Initially, multiple layouts of document formats are created. Insertion of variable data placeholders into the multiple layouts is specified. The variable data is then merged into an appropriate one of the multiple layouts at the location of the placeholders.

An ink jet ink composition is provided which permits the printing of an image with both superior fastness and high optical density, for use in continuous ink jet printers. The ink comprises an aqueous liquid medium which contains acid carbon black having a volatile content within the range of 3.5 to 8% by weight of the total weight of the carbon black, and a water-soluble resin having a weight average molecular weight within the range of 5,000 to 25,000. The weight ratio of the acid carbon black to the water-soluble resin is within the range of 2:1 to 5:1. The ink further comprises a dispersed pigment having a maximum particle size less than 1 micron and a filtration ratio greater than or equal to 0.2 through a 1.2 micron filter.

An improved continuous linear array ink jet apparatus deposits a predetermined amount of printing fluid of at least one color onto a linear array of pixels at high resolution. The continuous ink jet system includes a linear array of orifices fluidically connected to a fluid supply, for producing a linear array of jets. The jets are stimulated for regular break-up of each jet into a plurality of uniform streams of drops. A linear array of planar conducting elements, disposed along a path of motion of the array of jets, deflects the print drops (16) into at least two print positions. The linear array of planar conducting elements is situated at a predefined angle () with the motion of the print medium so that the resolution of the print system is substantially higher than the number of jets per inch along the array.

A detection technique comprises a plurality of closely spaced, continuous detection electrodes (10) placed immediately below and along the length of a charge plate (18) in an ink jet printing system. The detection electrodes (10) typically comprise parallel conductors. A circuit (14) is provided for monitoring the conductivity between the electrodes. The electrodes are electrically isolated from one another when properly placed on the catcher surface. If the conductivity, as measured by the circuit, rises above a predetermined threshold level it is an indication that some amount of unwanted ink is present at the location of the conductors. This signals improper print head operation requiring a print head shut-down and/or clean cycle.

An ink jet ink composition comprises a liquid vehicle, a dye, a hydroxyalkylated polyethyleneimine, and an ammonium salt for enhancement of waterfastness. The ammonium salt preferably comprises less than 1% of the ink composition, and is added to a combination of the dye and ethoxylated polyethyleneimine. The ink jet ink composition increases the waterfastness of the ink to a level greater than 85%.

Ink concentration changes in continuous ink jet printing systems have been minimized by reducing evaporation rates. This has the effect of also minimizing airflow through the catcher. The reduced catcher flow is not capable of completely removing air around the jets when the eyelid is closed, so this air becomes saturated with water vapor due to localized evaporation from ink drops. This, in turn, causes the air temperature to approach the ink temperature, which is greater than the eyelid seal temperature. The saturated air condenses on the eyelid and, over time, the condensate fills the volume and drips out of the eyelid, or causes shorts to the high voltage electrode. The formation of condensate on the eyelid is eliminated by providing a heater element (6b) formed into the eyelid.
