The invention concerns a method and an equipment for automatic monitoring and correcting of the regulation pressure of the regulation valves in the regulation valve block in a variable-crown roll in a paper machine. The regulation pressure of the regulation valve in each regulation zone (Z1...Z24) in the regulation valve block can be connected alternatingly to a reference pressure detector (PT), whose measurement signal is compared with the measurement signal of the actual value of the regulation pressure in the regulation zone (Z1...Z24) concerned. The result of the comparison is stored on the page of monitoring of pressure detectors contained in the central computer system, on which page, in addition to said difference, the set values and actual values of the regulation zone pressures as well as the value of the reference measurement are given. In addition to this, a correction can be made to the actual value of the regulation pressure in the regulation zone (Z1...Z24) concerned if the difference between the measurement signal of the reference pressure detector (PT) and the measurement signal of the actual value of the regulation pressure in the regulation zone (Z1...Z24) concerned is higher than a pre-determined value.

The invention concerns a method for the manufacture of a roll for use in the production of paper, in which method the roll is coated by means of thermal spraying. The method comprises the following steps: onto the coating (12) of the roll which has been produced by means of thermal spraying, a sealing-agent solution is spread to seal the pores (13) in the coating (12), the sealing-agent solution is allowed to be absorbed into the pores (13) in the coating (12), the roll is heated in order to eliminate the water from the sealing-agent solution, on elimination of the water, the sealing-agent solution crystallizes in the pores (13) in the coating (12), and the roll is allowed to cool. Further, the invention concerns a roll for use in the production of paper, which roll comprises a frame (10) and a roll coating (12), which coating (12) has been produced by means of thermal spraying. The coating (12) has been sealed by means of crystals formed out of a sealing-agent solution on elimination of water. Also, the invention concerns a coating for a roll for use in the production of paper, which coating (12) has been produced by means of thermal spraying, and in which coating (12) there are pores (13). In order to seal (12) the coating, a sealing agent (16) has been crystallized in the pores (13) in the coating (12).

The invention concerns a calender provided with an extended nip for calendering of a paper or board web. The calender comprises at least one calendering nip (N), which is formed between a heatable hard roll (1) and a calendering belt (10) which has been formed as an endless loop and which is loaded against the heatable hard roll (1) by means of a backup roll (3) or a press shoe (24). The paper or board web (W) to be calendered is arranged to run through said calendering nip (N). According to the invention, in respect of at least a part of its thickness, the calendering belt (10) is made of a material of compressible volume. According to a second embodiment of the invention, the necessary resilience in the nip (N) is provided by means of a separate support belt, which runs underneath the calendering belt in relation to the web (W).

The roll can be bent to the shape of the desired arc so that the roll axle consists of three parts linked with one another, i.e. of two end parts (12a) and of a middle part (12b), which are pivotal in relation to one another for the purpose of bending the roll mantle (11). The roll mantle (11) is journalled on the roll axle exclusively in the areas of the roll ends by means of bearings (14, 15) supported on the end parts (12a) of the axle. The material of the roll mantle (11) is preferably a composite material.
