A well screen for a horizontal or high-angle well includes a screen main body (11) and a protective frame (12). The protective frame includes protective rods (16) provided on the outside of the screen wire in the circumferential direction and extending in the axial direction of the well screen, annular rod holding members (17) provided with interval in the axial direction for holding the protective rods, and a protective wire (18) wound on the protective rods. When the well screen forced into the well passes through a bent section of the well, the protective frame slides in contact with the wall surface of the bent section thereby protecting the screen wire.

A multi-layer composite screen (1) having filters of a plurality of layers superposed one upon another is provided. Each filter (2, 3) of the plurality of layers has wires (4, 6) of a substantially triangular or trapezoidal cross section arranged in parallel to one another with a continuous slit (5, 7) of a substantially V-shaped cross section being formed between respective adjacent wires, said slit widening increasingly inwardly from the surface (4a) of the screen. The wires (4) of one filter (2) of the respective adjacent filters cross the wires (6) of the other filter (3) and the respective adjacent filters (2, 3) are fixed to each other at crossing points of the wires of the respective filters. In one aspect of the invention, the wires (6) of the lower layer are formed with linear projections (8) extending in the longitudinal direction of the wires which facilitate electrical welding of the filters of the adjacent layers.

A pair of elongated cylindrical members are constructed with first and second collars extending axially beyond their adjoining ends. The first and second collars have adjoining indentations and projections at their end edges which are adapted to interlock with one another so as to prevent rotation of the two elongated members with respect to one another. A coupler is removably fitted over the exterior of the first and second collars and holds them together against axial movement with respect to one another. The collars are each welded to the axial ends of the first and second cylindrical members. A sampling tube section is provided having slots to allow the fluid to be sampled to enter the internal bore of the tube. The slots are axial, and are spaced apart both angularly and axially. The slots are tapered so as to have a narrower width at the outer surface of the tube than at the inner surface of the bore.

A method of manufacturing a selective isolation screen includes steps of fitting a plurality of screen jackets (2) one by one on a base member (3), each of the screen jackets including a plurality of spacer members (4) extending in the longitudinal direction to be disposed, circumferentially spaced, on the base member and a wire (5) wound about the periphery of the spacer members with a predetermined gap, and welding the end portions of each screen jacket to the base member thereby fixing the screen jacket to the base member and also forming seal means and thus constituting a single unit screen. Difficulty in welding can thereby be avoided and location and state of mounting of sleeves can be visually checked.

The straight channel surfaces 23, 24 join a substantially rounded channel cross section as tangential planes. A plastics pipe 1 can be manufactured by extrusion. A plurality of interconnected plastics pipes 1 forms a well pipe; the pipes may be interconnected by screw thread, a glued joint 6a or by heat shrinkage.
