Determination of transmission power control commands in a UE by combining TPC commands received during DTX/DRX modes. The combining is done on those TPC commands which are received on different radio links after ignoring TPC commands which might be received in a DL slot overlapping with no UL transmission. The UE thus uses the combined TPC commands as derived at the time of entry into DTX for the second UL DPCCH preamble transmission which leads to increase in link reliability and subsequent conservation of power by the UE. The UE uses the same power as derived in the previous slot for resumption of transmission when all the TPC commands, received in the DL slot overlapping with no UL transmission, are UP. TPC commands for the transmission of the 2nd DPCCH preamble at transmission resumption is determined by combining stored TPC commands from each of the radio links that were received by the UE while entering into DTX gap and said TPC commands could not be applied with the newly received TPC commands.

A wireless tramsmit receive unit (WTRU) and a method provide controlled transmitter power in a wireless communication system in which both dedicated and shared channels are utilized. A network unit preferably has a receiver for receiving UL user data from WTRUs on uplink dedicated channels, UL DCHs, and at least one uplink shared channel, UL SCH, and a processor for computing target metrics for UL DCHs based on the reception of signals transmitted by a WTRU on an UL DCH associated with an UL SCH usable by the WTRU. A shared channel target metric generator is provided that is configured to output a respective UL SCH target metric derived from each computed UL DCH target metric. Each WTRU preferably has a processor which is configured to compute UL DCH power adjustments for an UL DCH associated with an UL SCH as a function of UL DCH target metrics computed by the network unit based on the reception of signals transmitted by the WTRU on the UL DCH and UL SCH power adjustments for the associated UL SCH as a function of the respective UL SCH target metrics output from the shared channel target metric generator. The present invention discloses a method for preventing from forward power saturation and a device for power control used in CDMA communication system. The characteristics of this invention are as follows. The control device includes a base station transmission power control unit, a base station transceiver, and a TPC instruction counter; the mobile station consists of a transceiver, a received signal qualify detector, and a TPC instruction generator. Through the process of saturation judgement and the process of saturation prevention, the invention can ensure that the limited power be distributed to the subscriber whose communication quality is really degraded, and can quickly compensate the serious degradation in channel quality due to deep fading. At the same time, the method can average the uniform power distribution between subscribers, and make a quick response to the subscriber in urgent need for power rise.

In communication systems that send transmit power control (TPC) commands in one direction so that only enough transmit power is used to maintain sufficient quality in the opposite direction, the TPC commands can be used to obtain information about the quality of the opposite-direction link. If there is sufficient quality, the number of TPC 'up' commands is about the same as the number of TPC 'down' commands, and if there is poor quality, more TPC 'up' commands are received than 'down' commands. A user equipment can use this information to adjust its TPC strategy and reduce the risk of poor reception and loss of synchronization to a communication node, such as a serving node for high-speed downlink packet access.
