摘要: Twin roll caster (11) produces cast steel strip (12) that passes in a transit path (10) through pinch roll stand (14) and optional hot rolling mill (15) and runout table (17) to a coiling station (19) which has a pair of switchable coilers (85, 86). A strip shear (81) located in advance of the coiling station is operable to sever strip (12) into discrete lengths which can be diverted by setting deflectors (82, 84) to allow the severed lengths to pass across a runout table (83) to a scrap bin (87). The strip may be thus severed and diverted to scrap on development of strip defects or malfunctioning of equipment without stopping continuous casting and the strip redirected to the coiling station when the problem is rectified.

摘要: Thin steel strip (11) is passed through a pinch roll stand (12) comprising pinch rolls (13) to a rolling mill (16) comprising a pair of work rolls (17) and upper and lower backing rolls (18). Strip (11) passes through the bite between work rolls (17) and strip squeezing forces are applied between the work rolls to reduce the thickness of the strip. Pinch rolls (13) apply tension to the strip passing to the work rolls (17). In order to minimize generation of crimping defects in the strip, the tension applied by the nip rolls (13) is high enough to ensure no part of the strip entering the work rolls is in longitudinal compression such as to exceed the buckling stress of the strip. The applied tension is sufficiently low as to produce no more than 1% strip elongation through creep. The strip may be hot rolled by work rolls (17) at a temperature in the range 700°C-1200°C.

Reduction mill (16) is similarly provided with a pair of hydraulic cylinder units (62) which are independently operable to vary the pressure applied by the reduction rolls (16A) across the strip. Sensors (51) and (61) sense the position of the strip at a first location in advance of the pinch rolls (50) and a second location in advance of the rolling mill. This output of sensors (51) and (62) is fed to a controller (63) which controls operation of both sets of hydraulic cylinder units (52) and (62) to steer the strip.

摘要: Method of producing strip comprising continuously casting plain carbon steel into a strip of no more than 5 mm thickness and coiling the strip. The strip is subsequently uncoiled and cold rolled then annealed to produce a stress relieved microstructure therein. The cold rolling produces a cold reduction sufficient to increase the tensile strength off the strip to at least 680 MPa but is such that the total elongation to break off the strip after the annealing is in the range 8 % to 12 %. The cold rolling may produce a cold reduction of the strip thickness in the range 40 % to 80 %. The continuously cast strip may be optionally in-line hot rolled prior to coiling to produce an initial strip thickness reduction in the range 40 % to 60 %.

Enclosure (37) and, if present, enclosure (61) are sealed to maintain positive pressure and oxygen levels less than the surrounding atmosphere, and with the presence of hydrogen gas, reduce formation of scale on the strip in enclosure (37) and, if present, enclosure (61).
