A retainer (58) retains, in a first operating position, the blanket in a first storage position. The blanket (01) becomes detached from the retainer (58) and leaves its first storage position when the retainer is changed to a second operating position. Below the first storage position, a second storage position is provided and is vertically spaced apart from said first position along the length of the blanket to be supplied. Said second storage position stores the blanket that is detached from the retainer before it is supplied to the cylinder (6). The method for supplying blankets (01) to the cylinder (6) of a printing machine is characterized in that the blankets to be supplied to the cylinder are stored lengthwise without contacting each other. Blankets that are to be sequentially supplied to the cylinder are stored in storage positions one on top of the other and vertically spaced apart along their length. At least one of the blankets (01) is supplied to the cylinder (6) only after a change from its vertical upper position to a vertical lower storage position.
