The invention relates to a method of detecting a possible leak in a vacuum package, which comprises - placing the package in a gauging space, - shutting off the gauging space, - applying a pressure in the closed gauging space higher than that in the vacuum package, and - gauging the pressure in the gauging space as function of the time for a predetermined gauging period. At least two identical vacuum packages (13) are each placed in a separate gauging space (20) of identical size. A mutually identical initial pressure is applied in the closed gauging spaces and the pressure variation is simultaneously gauged in the closed gauging spaces, while the difference in pressure variation between the two gauging spaces is determined.

A linear stepping motor adapted to be rapidly displaced between, and accurately and stably positioned in, successive quiescent positions. The stepping motor comprises a stationary section including at least three energizing elements (1-1...1-10) located in one row in the direction of displacement of the motor and at least one pole shoe (2-1...2-11) of ferromagnetic material is arranged between successive energizing windings (3). The dimensions of the successive energizing elements (1-1...1-10), as viewed in the direction of displacement of the motor, are equal and the successive energizing windings (3) are so formed that the magnetic field lines (3ʹ,3ʺ) thereof are substantially parallel to the direction of displacement of the motor. The motor further comprises a movable section having a bottom surface facing a top surface of the stationary section and at said bottom surface including at least two armature elements (6, 6ʹ) of a ferromagnetic material. The armature elements (6, 6ʹ) are arranged on a material having a low magnetic permeability, and the dimension of each of the armature elements (6, 6ʹ), as viewed in the direction of displacement of the motor, is essentially equal to the distance between the pole shoes (2-1...2-11) bordering one energizing winding (3). The motor further comprises means (7, 7ʹ, 8, 8ʹ) for supporting and guiding the movable section relatively to the stationary section with an air gap between the armature elements (6, 6ʹ) and the top surface of the stationary section.

According to the invention, the bag (2) is double-walled with the inner and outer walls merging into each other at the open end of the bag, is provided with a dimensionally stable frame (3) between the walls of the bag, and is further provided with an inlet (4) for admitting compressed air into the space between the walls of the bag.

A method and an apparatus for detecting a possible leak in a vacuum package 104, in which the vacuum package is received within a wrapping wall 102 at least essentially consisting of a gas- tight, flexible wrapping foil adapted for substantial adjustment to the contours of the vacuum package under the influence of overpressure, so that the vacuum package is tightly enveloped by the wrapping wall. Overpressure is applied to the wrapping foil such that this adjustment to the contours of the vacuum package is effected without sealing any leak present, ensuring that the pressure exteriorly of the vacuum package remains higher than the pressure within said vacuum package. Hermetic sealing from the outside air is effected in the residual space 118 remaining between the vacuum package and the wrapping wall during a predetermined detection period, the pressure being gauged in function of the time.
