There is provided a high refractive index, curable, synthetic resin composition comprising a core resin composition composed of a mixture of ethylenically unsatured compounds, and an initiation system containing both photo and thermal initiators, particularly a photochromic resin composition which further includes at least one photochromic dye. There is also provided a curing process, which includes a combination of multi-step radiation curing a thermal annealing. Articles produced of the cured composition exhibit superior physical and, in appropriate cases, photochromic properties and can be easily mass produced on a commercial scale due to short processing time and use of readily available chemicals.

The present invention relate to UV-curing-compatible photochromic simply- and doubly-fused naphthopyrans according to general formulae (I) or (II) and to the use thereof in plastics of every kind, in particular for ophthalmic purposes. The photochromic compounds according to the invention are characterised by their outstanding UV-curing compatibility, i.e. they remain - when placed, for example, into an acrylate monomer matrix with a UV-initiator - undamaged after radical polymerisation of the matrix triggered by strong UV-light. With a suitable substituent selection, the photochromic colorants according to the invention are further characterised by two pronounced absorption bands of the open form in the visible wavelength region, i.e. with such a molecule two conventional photochromic colorants - each comprising a discrete absorption band - can be substituted.

The invention relates to photochromic bis-indenofused naphthopyrans of the general formula (I) and to the use thereof in synthetic materials of all kinds, in particular for ophthalmic purposes. The photochromic compounds according to the invention are characterized by two distinct absorption bands of the open form in the visible wavelength range, which means that, with pigment molecules such as these, two traditional photochromic pigments, which each have only one discrete absorption band, can be replaced. Furthermore, the compounds according to the invention have a very good service life at very high performance.

The present invention relates to photochromic doubly-fused naphthopyrans of the general formula (I) or (II) and to their use in all kinds of plastics, in particular for ophthalmic purposes. The photochromic compounds according to the invention are distinguished by two pronounced absorption bands of the open form in the visible wavelength range, i.e. two traditional photochromic pigments, each of which only has one discrete absorption band, may be replaced by such pigment molecules. Moreover, the compounds according to the invention have a very long life combined with a very good performance.
