A communication device provided between a data terminal equipment and a telephone line converts an analog signal which is transmitted from a communicating terminal via a telephone line into a digital signal to enable the data terminal equipment to receive A/D converted data in accordance with a command signal from the data terminal equipment. The communication device has a line connector for connecting the phone line with the data terminal equipment upon receiving a ring back signal from the communicating terminal, a judgement unit for judging whether the communicating terminal is a facsimile machine based on a certain signal transmitted from the communicating terminal via the phone line immediately after the line connection, and a signal transmitter for transmitting the data terminal equipment a certain arrival signal representative of arrival of data from the communicating terminal when the judgement unit judges that the communicating terminal is the facsimile machine. The communication device transmits the arrival signal to the data terminal equipment exclusively when it is judged that the communicating terminal is the facsimile machine, thereby facilitating data reception from the facsimile machine and improving a data reception efficiency.
