A lock assembly (16) for securing a container (10) having an interior region is disclosed. The lock assembly (16) includes a housing (18) positionable on the interior of the container (10), a bolt (26) moveable relative to the housing (18) between an extended position inhibiting access to the interior region of the container (10) and a retracted position to facilitate access to the interior region, a dial (20) positionable on an exterior of the container (10). The dial (20) includes a plurality of indicators (30, 32) indicative of a plurality of dial positions, and an electronic controller (46) operably coupled to the dial (20) to detect the relative position of the dial (20) to determine if a combination entered with the dial (20) provides authorization to move the bolt (26) from the extended position to the retracted position.

A push-pull lock has a bolt whose motion in both directions is stopped in response to detection of a rise in motor current above a certain level: a cushioning arrangement allows the current-limiting feature (600) to be implemented without risk of damage to the motor (202), gear teeth or other drive components. A re-locker arrangement includes an angled flange that is part of a motor-supporting bracket (206); when forcibly pressed, the flange breaks plastic pins (920) to release a spring-biased re-locker wire (950) to block the bolt from being withdrawn. The system also provides a position sensor switch (692), a keypad tampering detection and response system (646), remote enable/disable unit (5), duress detection and response unit (7), low-battery sensing arrangement (600) and bolt extension indication, adjustable bolt throw and audit trail features.

The user then rotates an inner dial (102) to cause a microprocessor to sequentially display combination of numbers, and presses inner dial (102) to select a displayed number. A microcontroller determines direction and extent of motion of the inner dial by receiving signals derived from Wiegand sensors placed in proximity to a magnetized disc which rotates integrally with the inner dial, and controls the display of numerals on an LCD display accordingly. When the microcontroller determines that a correct combination has been entered, it activates a motor (201) which moves a motor cam (205) to act directly on a locking lever (213) so that the locking lever can engage a drive cam (218) integrally linked with the inner dial, to allow the inner dial to withdraw the lock's bolt.
