The invention relates to a method for winding a paper, board or material web on a winder of the two-drum type. In the method, the winding core (10) ends placed against each other are coupled to be on the same axis of rotation during winding by means of severing cuts (12U, 12N) which are formed in the ends (11A, 11B) of the winding cores (10) and which deviate from a perpendicular cutting line. The invention also relates to a winder for a paper, board or material web for winding the web on a two-drum type winder, which winder winds slit component webs. A spirally or convolutely wound multi-layer tube includes one or more plies or layers that have embossments formed therein and projecting from one or both sides of each such ply or layer. The embossments increase the effective caliper and volume of the ply without adding mass. The tube is formed by spirally winding a plurality of plies (10,12,14,16,18) onto an elongate stationary mandrel (20) of circular cylindrical form. The invention is applicable to tubes having as few as one and as many as 25 or more plies. Plies (10,12) are spirally wound in that order onto the mandrel (20) and adhesive is applied by an adhesive applicator (22) to the inward-facing surface of the second ply (12) to adhere the plies (10,12) together to form a tube on the mandrel. Downstream of the winding belt (24), the plies (14,16,18) are spirally wound onto the advancing tube, and adhesive applicators (26,28,30) respectively apply adhesive to these plies to adhere them to one another and to the ply (12), thus forming an integral tube (40). The ply (14) is passed through an in-line embosser (32) to emboss the ply. Thus, the ply (14) is drawn from a supply roll (not shown) as an ordinary unembossed ply and is embossed in the embosser (32) as the ply is being advanced to the mandrel (20). Alternatively, an embossed ply could be prepared beforehand and could be supplied in the form of a roll of embossed material. Alternatively the tube is formed by convolutely winding a single ply.

A method and apparatus (20) for forming coreless rolls (15) of pressure sensitive adhesive tape involves the use of a mandrel assembly (55) having a specific circumferential tape supporting segment (234) thereon for winding tape. The circumferential tape supporting segment (234) has a tape engaging surface portion (246) that, in a radial orientation, is compressible yet sufficiently stiff to support the tape as it is successively wound about the mandrel (55) to form a tape roll (15), and that is sufficiently pliant to permit ready axial removal of a wound tape roll (15) from the mandrel (55). The innermost wrap (72) of pressure sensitive adhesive tape about the mandrel (55) is masked by an adhesive liner (73). That liner (73) is formed from one portion of a liner/tab strip (123) which had been applied to the tape previously, and prior to winding, the tape is severed, and the remainder of that liner/tab (76) forms an end tab on the outermost end (75) of the previously formed coreless tape roll (15). The liner/tab strip (123) is applied by advancing the liner/tab material (90) laterally across the advancing web of pressure sensitive tape (26) adjacent a first, adhesive bearing side (27) thereof, cutting the liner/tab material (90) to a length approximating the width of the web (26), urging the leading lateral edge portion (190) of the cut liner/tab strip (123) against the first, adhesive bearing side (27) of the advancing web (26) and urging the remainder of the liner/tab strip (123) against the advancing web (26) as the web (26) carries the liner/tab strip (123) away.

The core (20) is selectively cut and scored to form folding tab portions (30) that fold radially inward when the core (20) is in a generally flattened configuration. Upon rerounding of the core (20) to a generally cylindrical configuration, the folding tab portions (30) can be unfolded to form circular arcs conforming to the core inner and outer surfaces (28, 26). The folding tab portions (30) enable the core (20) to reround to a generally cylindrical configuration that resists reflattening.

The spools have internal projections (12) formed by inwards-bent tabs which are punched out of the wall of the spool and which are designed to act as stops when several of the spools are stacked together. The two webs (40,42) are fed to either side of a rotating cutter roll (66) and anvil assemblies (72,88) are moved into engagement with a knife carried on the cutter roll selectively to sever the webs as required.
