The cage (22) has first and second cage halves (24,26) with each cage half having a respective radial segment (25,27) with a plurality of circumf erentially spaced openings (30,32). The cage halves (24,26) are interconnected with portions of the radial segments (25,27) circumf erentially between the plurality of openings (30,32) abutting along a given plane and the respective openings (30,32) aligned to defined rolling element pockets. The rolling elements (2) are positioned in the rolling element pockets such that a centerline of each rolling element (2) lies in or in proximity to the given plane (P). A flange (34) extends along at least a portion of each opening perimeter to retain the rolling elements (2) within a respective one of the rolling element pockets.

A thrust roller bearing cage (10) is a plate-shaped circular ring in which four arcuate pieces 1a, 1b, ... are laser welded along laser welding lines (4ab, 4bc, ...). A plurality of rectangular pockets (2a, 2b, ...) are formed at regular intervals in the cage (10), including the intervals including the laser welding lines (4ab, 4bc, ...). Each of the laser welding lines (4ab, 4bc, ...) extends across the total length from the inner periphery to an outer periphery of the circular ring, so that the laser welding lines have sufficient length and strength. A predetermined strength of the cage (10) can be obtained without decreasing the number of rollers which may be accommodating and wastage of material when making cages from sheet material is reduced.

The roller retainer (1) includes a pair of annular portions (103, 104) spaced in an axial direction from each other and a plurality of pillars (105) extending between respective outer peripheral edges of the annular portions (103, 104) and spaced in a direction circumferentially of the annular portions (103, 104). The rollers (2) are accommodated within respective pockets (106) each defined between the neighboring pillars (105). One or both of the annular portions (103, 104) are provided with roller retaining pawls (107) of a bent shape in respective portions of inner peripheral portions of the annular portions (103, 104) at a location aligned with the neighboring rollers (2) for constraining the rollers (2) from separating in a direction radially inwardly of the roller retainer (1). An object is to provide a cage and a thrust roller bearing with improved oil passage performance of a lubricating oil in the inside of a bearing while holding a needle roller in a stable manner so as to ensure excellent durability. The thrust roller bearing includes a needle roller (2) and a cage (3) holding the needle roller in pockets (5, 6) for accommodating the same.
