An apparatus is provided for making dual-component fibers (100a). The apparatus comprises a distributor (40), equipment for providing first and second thermoplastic materials (A, B) to the distributor (40), a rotatable spinner (90) and a rotation mechanism. The distributor (40) has an outer casing (50) and a divider cup (60) fixedly positioned within the outer casing (50). The outer casing (50) has first and second orifices (56, 58) extending through its peripheral wall (54). The divider cup (60) defines with the outer casing (50) first and second chambers (70, 72) for receiving first and second molten thermoplastic materials (A, B). The first orifices (56) communicate with the first chamber (70), and the second orifices (58) communicate with the second chamber (72). The rotatable spinner (90) includes first and second passages (94a, 94b) in its peripheral wall (54). The rotation mechanism rotates the distributor (40) and the spinner (90) to centrifuge layers of the first and second thermoplastic materials (A, B) through the first and second orifices (56, 58) and to centrifuge dual-component fibers (100a) through the first and second passages (94a, 94b) in the peripheral wall (54) of the spinner (90).

A process of melt spinning a fibre-forming thermopias- tic polymer, more particularly polyethylene terephthalate, polyhexamethylene adipamide or polypropylene, at a minimum wind up speed of 1 kilometre per minute in which there is added to the fibre-forming polymer, between 0.1 % and 10% by weight of another polymer which is immiscible in a melt of the fibre-forming polymer, such other polymer having a particle size of between 0.5 and 3 microns in the melt with the fibre-forming polymer immediately prior to spinning and novel melt spun fibres produced by such a process and in which the other polymer is in the form of microfibrlls.
