Modular floating semisubmersible platform structures suitable for supporting offshore oil exploration and production platforms and for fabricating a mobile offshore base capable of landing and launching aircraft in deep ocean environment. The structure utilizes Y-shaped joints (30) interconnecting plural legs (32) of a modular cylindrical tank frame or a space frame (35). The space frame is made up of plural frame members where each corner of the frame includes a Y-shaped joint. Stable offshore floating structures for drilling and production platforms can utilize the integral space frames in a truncated dodecahedral, inverted pyramid or tetrahedral configuration. The Y-shaped joint can be formed of three channel members (96) in a face-to-face configuration to form the Y-shaped joint. If the channel members are secured to each other face-to-face, they can form hollow flotation chambers suitable for use as a floating platform. The Y-shaped joints (146) can also be formed as flexible inflatable members interconnected by coupling members (170) to form a rigid floating structure.

A method for building vessels constructed of an inner structure and a skin consisting of several layers which together form a single laminate characterized in that the inner structure is built first, whereupon a thin plate is attached thereto in such a way that together they form a mould for the skin. The method is characterized in that the skin is laminated on the outside of said mould; the mould and the skin are separated; the thin plate is removed from the inner structure; the inner structure and the skin are joined. The mould is divided into sections so that the last three steps take place section by section. The thin plate constitutes one or more of the layers in the skin laminate, and the other layers in the skin are laminated directly on to the outside of the thin plate after said plate has been placed on the outside of the inner structure. The skin is laminated on to the outside of the mould, whereupon the thin plate is removed. The building of the inner structure, the application of the thin skin plate and the lamination of the skin take place whilst the vessel is positioned upside down.

A hull structure of nonmetallic material, in particular of a reinforced plastics material, for boats, ships, minesweepers and the like, comprises a preferably one-piece shell (1) and at least one deck (2, 2') and has a plurality of ribs (3) which are distributed along the length of the hull and extend across the corresponding transverse section of said shell (1) and a plurality of transverse members (4, 4') (known as beams) which extend directly underneath the deck (2, 2'). In order to give the hull greater structural strength and make it lighter, the invention provides that each transverse rib (3) joined to the shell (1) is connected (103, 203) to a corresponding transverse member (4, 4') joined to the deck (2, 2') and to continuous fore and aft members (15) (girders) passing in the manner of bulkheads, so as to form a single one-piece frame with the keel member. The invention achieves the aforesaid object to a still greater degree by means of additional improvements.
