A post designed for sign or guide marker use having sufficient longitudinal rigidity to withstand a force driving it into the ground and sufficient elastic character to permit nondestructive deformation upon impact by a moving object, with subsequent restoration to an original, upright position. Various construction materials and/or structural configurations are disclosed for obtaining this dual character without incurring high production and material cost. By employing a structural configuration whose moment of inertia decreases due to deformation at a cross section, post flexibility improves to preclude sheering during impact.

A vertical member, for example of a sign post, is attached to a base member by one or more couplings comprising a web having at least one linear groove therein and an opening adjacent at least one end of the groove or grooves and generally transverse thereto, the portion of the web on one side of the opening being attached to the vertical member and the portion of the web on the other side of the opening being attached to the base member, the groove in the so-attached coupling being generally vertical. Under horizontal impact loading the transverse forces tear the web along the groove, but under weight or wind loadings longitudinal shearing forces are exerted on the groove which is thus able to sustain higher such loadings.

The present application is concerned with an elongated stiff but bendable plastic article which finds particular utility in highway delineators. The article has a central lens shape in the cross-section perpendicular to its major axis which is formed by joining two sheets along both of their longitudinal edges. The sheets both have parallel longitudinal edges and are configured in an arc in their shorter dimension. A reverse radius is provided in each longitudinal edge just before it joins the similar edge of the other sheet to allow the article to be bent 90° across its major axis in the plane of its minor axis without sign i ficant plastic deformation. The article is constructed of a thermoplastic that can sustain substantial elastic deformation.

A ground anchor (10) for channel posts (11) has an angle iron leg (19) driven into the ground with a creased upright fin shroud strip (21) embracing the apex or corner (26) of the angle iron (19) at the trailing end of the leg (19) and secured to the ends (27) of the sides (25) of the angle iron (19) providing a V-shaped socket (29). The channel post (11) straddles the angle iron (19) with its side legs (15) bottomed on the sides (25) of the angle iron (19) and a compression member (31) bottomed on the strip (21) forces the channel post (11) against the angle iron (19) to spread the legs (15) of the post (11) into tight gripping relation with the angle iron (19) locking the post (11) in the socket (29). The socket (29) is open-ended and the post (11) can slide over the angle iron leg (19) to any desired depth so that a sign (12) mounted on top of the post (11) can be positioned at a selected height above the ground. The angle iron (19) is driven into the ground to a depth sufficient to bury the shroud strip (21) so that the post (11) is the only portion of the assemply projecting above the ground. The spreading of the legs (15) of the post (11) places them under tension so that when the post (11) is struck by a vehicle it will only bend at the impact zone, but will shear at the tensioned zone so that no metal will project above ground.

Ein Einspannbereich (31) des Ständerprofils (3) ist erfindungsgemäß über mecha nische Mittel (4, 5) formschlüssig in der Ausnehmung (2) verspannbar.

The invention relates to a road boundary marker provided with a support for the reflector (2) that extends laterally with respect to the vertical support structure of the road boundary marker. The latter is preferably made in a number of parts (1 a, 1 b and 1 c) that can be dovetailed together; of these the part (1 a) is provided with means for anchoring the marker to the ground. With a road boundary marker constructed in this way, better visibility of the reflector is ensured and the maintenance operation of removing the grass and clearing the side of the road is rendered easy. Furthermore, in the event of any part being damaged, the replacement of the complete boundary marker is avoided.

Each bar means may be an inverted T-section bar or two L-section bars secured to one another with their vertical webs mutually opposite and apsced, preferably by spindles on which spiked metal strips are mounted for pivotal movement between a first position wherein it is accommodated in said gap and a second position wherein it projects downwardly from the L-section bars, the two strips being offset one to each side of the median plane bisecting said gap and being maintained in such dispositions by spacers mounted on the spindles alongside the strips.
