The invention relates to a method for the horizontally successive production of coke chamber-compatible coal briquettes. In said method the coal is tipped out of a coal feeder into a pressing mould, which is formed from a plate having next to it two parallel terminating walls, which are stationary with respect to the direction of movement of the plate, and a terminating stop wall disposed on the plate transversely to the direction of movement of the plate. The pressing mould is therefore open to coal in only a horizontal direction. The side of the pressing mould open to coal is closed by a stationary wall, and the plate is braked or locked in the horizontal direction for the pressing operation, during which the coal is compacted by a tamping device, which is pressed by a device having a vertically acting force onto the coal in the pressing mould to produce a coal briquette. After completion of the coal briquette, the plate is moved horizontally in the longitudinal direction of the pressing mould so that the space in the pressing mould becoming free in the horizontal direction is used for producing the next coal briquette. The invention also relates to a device for carrying out said method.

Preferably, the structural unit (6) can be moved along the stamping form and is equipped with a drive unit. The reduction in the height of the coal cake can be achieved by leaving out coal or compacted coal, and the increase in height by heaping up coal and pressing, or adding compacted coal, wherein the pressing is also avoided, so that a recess having reduced coal cake density and reduced radiant heat is obtained.
