The flexible pipe joint also has an annular flexible boot for thermally or chemically insulating the annular elastomeric flexible element from the fluid flowing through a lumen of the flexible pipe joint. The annular flexible boot encircles the lumen, and the annular flexible boot has a first annular end attached to the extension pipe and a second annular end mounted so that pivoting of the extension pipe with respect to the body causes a flexing of the annular flexible boot, and a majority of the annular flexible boot has a shape conforming to shape of neighboring components of the flexible pipe joint.

The flex elements (74, 75) at the inner radius are coupled mechanically in series between the extension pipe (54) and the housing (50) of the flexible pipe joint, and the flex element (61, 62) at the outer radius is coupled mechanically in parallel with the series combination of the inner flex.elements (74, 75). The inner flex elements (74, 75) isolate the flex element (61, 62) at the outer radius from transport fluid, and the flex element (61, 62) at the outer radius reduces the axial compression of the inner flex elements (74, 75). Thus, the inner flex elements (74, 75) may have a reduced radius and a different composition to handle a higher loading of heat and pressure.

An inner housing (80) is disposed in the outer housing (50), and first and second secondary annular elastomeric flex elements (81,82) disposed in the inner housing (80) mount the first and second extension pipes (51,52) to the inner housing (80). Tension upon the first and second extension pipes (51,52) places each of the first and second primary flex elements (71,74) and each of the first and second secondary flex elements (81,82) in compression. The first and second secondary flex elements (81,82) contain fluid pressure within the first and second extension pipes (51,52) so that the first and second primary flex elements (71,74) are not subjected to the fluid pressure within the extension pipes (51,52).
