A method and apparatus for dynamic contrast improvement in video pictures is proposed. There is a strong demand for picture contrast and high quality video. The picture contrast can't be increased by simply increasing the video signal amplitude because exceeding the display dynamic range in some video scenes causes unwanted disturbing effects. A basic solution for dynamic contrast improvement includes that the video pictures are analysed framewise in real time and the parameters of a transfer function (11) for contrast improvement are adjusted depending on the analysis results for the best subjective picture quality. Within this basic solution it is proposed to perform a step of adaptive signal splitting in which a noise reduced luminance signal (Y_CORED) is generated which then is transformed by means of the transfer function. A moving picture plane is composed with a still picture plane and a graphics plane to obtain a composite image plane in a graphics generator. A moving picture area, a still picture area and a graphics area of the composite image plane are specified and detected as binary detection signals on the basis of drawing area indicating information transmitted from a broadcast side or the signal level or composite rate of each image plane before the composition in a drawing area detecting circuit. The detection signals are composed with one another in the levels corresponding to the areas to generate a multivalued composite detection signal in a detection signal composing circuit. On the basis of the composite detection signal, the contrast, the enhancement of high band components of the luminance signal and the amplitude of the speed modulation signal are controlled every drawing area of a moving picture, a still picture and graphics. When the video signal of the moving picture plane and the video signals of the non-moving picture planes such as a still picture plane, and a graphics plane are composed with one another and then the composite display is displayed on a display, the optimum image quality can be achieved in each of the moving picture area and the non-moving picture area of the composite image plane.

A display which is applicable to a display for time display or the like and is capable of preventing sticking with a simple configuration. The display comprises a display unit for displaying an image with input of video display data including information on a brightness level of each display pixel constituting a screen, a data collecting unit for acquiring and accumulating video display data supplied to the display unit at certain time periods and for collecting brightness levels of the accumulated video display data for each display pixel, an operational processing unit for deriving an average value of the brightness levels for each display pixel from the collection result, a reverse characteristics data converting unit for obtaining reverse characteristic data with reversed brightness levels based on the average brightness level of each display pixel, and a control unit for causing the reverse characteristic data obtained by the reverse characteristic data converting unit to be displayed at the display means for a certain time period instead of the video display data.

The method and apparatus provides a capability involving storing a portion of a received program and accessing the stored information to provide a time-compressed version of the portion of the program during playback as being an output signal. When viewed, the time-compressed signal provides the program portion in a fraction of its original time duration. When playback is complete, the time-compressed signal is replaced with the original input video signal. The playback signal may be displayed as an auxiliary picture while the main picture displays the input video signal. During playback, new time-compressed information can be stored. Playback of new data occurs at a rate faster than its storage rate and as a result, there will be a time at which the 'past' signal produced during playback and the original received signal, coincide in time; at this time the output signal is automatically switched back to the received program signal.
