A process and composition for deinking waste paper is disclosed. The process comprises administering an alcohol, randomly alkoxylated with a mixture of alkylene oxides to form a surfactant, to a sample of waste paper for which treatment is desired. The surfactant enhances the aggregation and densification of electrostatic toner particles, while promoting foaming in the aqueous slurry.

Compositions and methods for inhibiting the deposition of organic contaminants from pulp on the surfaces of pulp and papermaking systems are disclosed. The composition is a combination of a polyvinyl alcohol having 50 to 100 % hydrolysis and a high molecular weight gelatin having a molecular weight of about 100,000 or higher and is added to the pulp or sprayed onto the surfaces of the pulp and papermaking system. In a preferred embodiment, synergism is demonstrated by an 8 to 1 weight ratio of polyvinyl alcohol to high molecular weight gelatin.

A benzotriazole or benzimidazole compound is added to a combination of ethoxylated mercaptan and/or oxidized ethoxylated mercaptan and 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid. The composition is added to an aqueous system, such as a steam generating system, to remove scale from the metal surfaces.
