The subject of the invention is a method for the production of diphenylmethane diamine, comprising the following steps: a) reaction of aniline with formaldehyde in the presence of an acid, b) neutralization of the acid with ammonia, c) separation of the reaction mixture from step b) into an aqueous and an organic phase, d) treatment of the aqueous phase obtained from step c) with an oxide or hydroxide of an alkaline earth metal, e) removal of the ammonia obtained in step d).
