The instant invention is directed to a process for extracting organic acids including naphthenic acids, heavy metals, and sulfur from a starting crude oil comprising the steps of: (a) treating the starting crude oil containing organic acids, heavy metals, and sulfur with an amount of an ethoxylated amine and water under conditions and for a time and at a temperature sufficient to form a water-in-oil emulsion of amine salt wherein said ethoxylated amine has formula (I): where m=1 to 10 and R=C3 to C6 hydrocarbon; (b) separating said emulsion of step (a) into a plurality of layers, wherein one of such layers contains a treated crude oil having decreased amounts of organic acids, heavy metals and sulfur; (c) recovering said layer of step (b) containing said treated crude oil having decreased amounts of organic acids, heavy metal and sulfur and layers containing water and ethoxylated amine salt.

Scavenger compositions and methods for reducing the level of sulfide impurities present in a fluid stream. The method includes contacting the stream with a composition comprising the reaction product of an aldehyde and a aminoethylpiperazine (AEP) and a second aliphatic amine NHR1R2, wherein R1 or R2 can be hydrogen and wherein R1 and R2 contain a total of from 1 to about 6 crbons. It is possible to obtain a biphasic liquid spent scavenger. One amine-containing phase can be regenerated by addition of aldehyde for reuse as scavenger. Another sulfided product-containing phase can be used as a corrosion inhibitor. A preferred aldehyde is formaldehyde and a preferred second aliphatic amine is n-butyl amine.

A method for scavenging sulfur species from a petroleum-derived medium is disclosed. The method comprises contacting the medium with sulfur species scavenging amount of an imine of the formula wherein x is an integer from 1 to 10, R' is an organic moiety having a number of valences equal to x, R 1 is hydrogen or a mono-valent organic moieties and R is a mono-valent olefin moiety, provided that R and R 1 contain a total of from about four to about forty carbon atoms. In an alternative embodiment, the imine is produced by a condensation reaction between an amine having at least one primary amino group and a carbonyl of the formula wherein R 1 is hydrogen or a mono-valent organic moieties and R is a mono-valent olefin moiety, provided that R and R 1 contain a total of from about four to about forty carbon atoms. In yet other embodiments, the imine is produced by a condensation reaction between an amine having at least one primary amino group and an aldehyde having at least one alpha-hydrogen in an aldehyde to primary amino group molar ratio of at least about 2:1, are also disclosed.
