The invention provides a device for measuring radiation, as well as a method for measuring with the device, and a controllable lighting system with the device. The device (l') has a side wall (2) with a sensor (5, 5'), a radiation entrance opening (4'), and optionally a top wall (9) and bottom cap (10). The sensor is sensitive only to indirect radiation that is reflected at a reflection area, such as a ring (12a - 12b). The device is not sensitive to dust deposition, because most dust is blocked by the side wall (2), while any other dust will pass the sensor surface and reflection area(s) on air currents parallel thereto, without any deposition of dust or dirt. Hence the sensor will give more reliable measurements, even in dusty environments. The method involves orienting the device with respect to the light to be measured and to possible currents. The controllable lighting system involves measuring light levels with the device, and having a control unit control one or more lamps on the basis of those measurements.

The casing (110) houses an electronic voltage regulating circuit (140) that has an input (141/142) and an output (143/144) in electrical connection with the contacts (136) and the light bulb (122) respectively. The circuit (140) is arranged to regulate the voltage of said battery pack (200) down to substantially the optimum operating voltage of the light bulb (122) for operating the light bulb (122).

An apparatus for applying a variable voltage to an electric load (10) utilizes a transformer (20) with several taps (221,222,223) to provide different voltage levels for the load. The load (10) is connected to alternate taps by a switching device (40), which is operated by a control device (50) responsive to short interruptions in the power supply to the load. Short interruptions in power can be generated by rapidly turning one or more existing power switches (32,34) in circuit with the load off and on again, so remote control is possible from several locations. Apparatus with the above structure is particularly suitable while employing a toroidal transformer for dimmer control of halogen lamps.
