The present invention concerns a downhole cable or control line detection tool. More particularly, but not exclusively, this invention concerns a method and apparatus for the downhole detection of a cable or control line associated with the external wall of a well casing. A downhole tool for the detection of downhole cable or control lines is provided. The downhole tool comprises an eddy current sensor, the eddy current sensor being arranged to be proximate to the internal wall of a well casing. The eddy current sensor is arranged for pulsed operation. The downhole tool further comprises a mechanism for rotating the eddy current sensor, with an axis of rotation parallel with the longitudinal axis of a well casing.

A downhole assembly, such as a toe-to-heel gravel pack assembly, has a body with a body passage, outlet ports for slurry, and screens for fluid returns. An inner string deploys in the body to perform the toe-to-heel gravel packing. A telescoping adjustment device allows the inner string to space out properly when deployed to the toe of the assembly. Sealing surfaces of a locating device in the body separate a sealable space and seal against seals on the inner string movably disposed therein. Fluid pumped in the string produces a pressure buildup when the string's port communicates with the sealable space. The pressure buildup indicates that the tool is positioned at a first location in the assembly, and other positions for placement of the tool can then be calculated therefrom.

A method for identifying the location of a binding zone between a stuck tubular and a borehole includes the steps of passing a demagnetizing stress sensor 106 through the tubular on a baseline magnetization pass to magnetize the tubular. Next, the demagnetizing stress sensor 106 measures a baseline magnetization of the tubular. Once the baseline magnetization has been established, the method continues by applying a stress to the tubular and passing the demagnetizing stress sensor 106 through the tubular on a scanning pass while the tubular is stressed. The demagnetizing stress sensor 106 then measures a stress-induced magnetization of the tubular. The method concludes by comparing the baseline magnetization of the tubular against the stress-induced magnetization of the tubular. Notably, in preferred embodiments, the method includes the magnetization of the tubular in a substantially radial direction and the stresses are applied in vectors perpendicular to the radial magnetization of the tubular.

A downhole tool is provided for measuring accelerations at a location within a subterranean borehole. The tool is rotatable around the longitudinal direction of the borehole. The tool includes four accelerometers, each accelerometer measuring acceleration in a respective direction and being arranged such that at least a component of its measured acceleration is normal to the longitudinal direction. The accelerometers are further arranged such that no more than any two of the four accelerometers have their respective components parallel to the same direction. The tool also includes a first device which measures the rotational speed of the tool. The tool also includes a processor unit which relates the acceleration measured by each accelerometer to the true acceleration at that accelerometer by a respective scaling term and a respective offset, and combines the measured accelerations and the tool rotational speed to re-calibrate the scaling terms as the tool rotates.

A detection system and method for a well site is provided. The well site has a surface rig and a surface unit. The surface rig is positioned about a formation and a surface unit. The detection system includes a well site component deployable from the surface rig via a conveyance, well site equipment positioned about the well site and having a bore to receive the well site component therethrough; and base units. The base units include scanners positioned radially about the bore of the well site equipment. The scanners detect an outer surface of the well site component and generate combinable images of the well site component whereby the well site equipment is imaged.

Methods and apparatus for actuating a downhole tool in wellbore includes acquiring a CCL data set or log from the wellbore that correlates recorded magnetic signals with measured depth, and selects a location within the wellbore for actuation of a wellbore device. The CCL log is then downloaded into an autonomous tool. The tool is programmed to sense collars as a function of time, thereby providing a second CCL log. The autonomous tool also matches sensed collars with physical signature from the first CCL log and then self-actuates the wellbore device at the selected location based upon a correlation of the first and second CCL logs.
