摘要: A radiation therapy/surgery device optimised to meet the needs of the Neurosurgeon is provided, i.e. one for the treatment of tumours in the brain. It combines the qualities of a good penumbra and accuracy, simple prescription and operation, together with high reliability and minimal technical support. The device comprises a rotateable support, on which is provided a mount extending from the support out of the plane of the circle, and a radiation source attached to the mount via a pivot, the pivot having an axis which passes through the axis of rotation of the support, the radiation source being aligned so as to produce a beam which passes through the co-incidence of the rotation axis and the pivot. It will generally be easier to engineer the apparatus if the rotateable support is planar, and more convenient if the rotateable support is disposed in an upright position. The rotation of the rotateable support will be eased if this part of the apparatus is circular. A particularly preferred orientation is one in which the radiation source is spaced from the rotateable support, to allow it to pivot without fouling the latter. It is thus preferred that the mount extends transverse to the support. In this way, the pivot axis is spaced from the rotateable support providing free space in which the radiation source can pivot. Another way of expressing this preference is to state that the pivot axis is located out of the plane of the rotateable support. To simplify the geometry of the device and the associated arithmetic, it is preferred both that the pivot axis is substantially perpendicular to the rotation axis, and that the beam direction is perpendicular to the pivot axis. It is preferred that the radiation source is a linear accelerator. The output of the radiation source is preferably collimated to conform to the shape of the area to be treated.

摘要: We propose to shape the leaf by the use of electro-chemical machining (ECM). ECM is a technique by which a blank is suspended within a mould, with a small gap therebetween. A conductive fluid is caused to flow through the gap, and a large electrical current is passed from the mould to the blank. The blank steadily erodes, dissolving into the fluid. The fluid should not provoke a reaction from the material of the blank, such as a surface oxide. Sodium Chloride solution is a common choice. The current that is passed can, if desired, be controlled to a profile that will affect the manner of erosion. Thus, the current profile can be a steady on/off current, or it can be pulsed. One known arrangement is for the current to rise to a peak, then fall to zero, followed by a brief reverse flow.

摘要: A radiotherapeutic apparatus employs a collimator (52) set below a radiation source (50) and is adapted to move along an arc (54) substantially centred on the radiation source (50). As it sweeps the arc, the collimator (52) is adjusted so as to define the appropriate shape of radiation beam. A continuous sweep over the patient avoids edge artefacts and localised accumulation of leakage.

摘要: An accelerator comprises a plurality of accelerating cells arranged to convey a beam, adjacent cells being linked by a coupling cell, the coupling cells being arranged to dictate the ratio of electric field in the respective adjacent accelerating cells, at least one coupling cell being switchable between a positive ratio and a negative ratio. Such an accelerator in effect inserts a phase change into the E field by imposing a negative ratio, meaning that the beam will meet a reversed electric field in subsequent cells and will in fact be decelerated. As a result, the beam can be developed and bunched in early cells while accelerating to and/or at relativistic energies, and then bled of energy in later cells to bring the beam energy down to (say) between 100 and 300 KeV. Energies of this magnitude are comparable to diagnostic X-rays, where much higher contrast of bony structures exists. Hence the accelerator can be used to take kilovoltage portal images. A suitable structure for the switchable coupling cell comprises a cavity containing a conductive element rotatable about an axis transverse to the beam axis, as for example set out in our earlier application PCT/GB99/00187. The application also relates to the use of such an accelerator and an operating method for such an accelerator.

摘要: This is an improvement on our earlier application, PCT/GB99/00187. The device then disclosed allowed the variation of the coupling between two points in an RF circuit in a very simple way whilst maintaining the RF phase relationship and varying the relative magnitude of the RF fields. It was characterised by a simple single mechanical control of coupling value, that has negligible effect on the phase shift across the device. This was achieved by the simple rotation of the polarisation of a TE111 mode inside a cylindrical cavity. In this application, a slight frequency dependence on the angle of rotation is correctable by a relative excess of material located opposite the apertures between the coupling cavity and the accelerating cavities.

摘要: A treatment planning system for a radiotherapy apparatus comprises a processor that receives an input data set comprising: a dose distribution within a volume to be irradiated that is to be achieved by the radiotherapy apparatus; a three dimensional volume image that characterises tissue types within the volume; and a set of process parameters which characterise a delivery process of radiotherapy. The system outputs a treatment plan to deliver the dose distribution when implemented by the delivery process, by optimising a function that includes at least one part representing a time-dependent response of the tissue types to an applied radiation dose. The input data set may further comprise a number of treatment fractions over which the dose distribution is to be delivered and the processor arranged to assign fractional parts of the dose distribution to successive treatment fractions, taking into account time and dose dependent characteristics of the tissue types in the volume image. The three-dimensional volume image may characterise the tissue types according to at least their local microenvironment. The at least one part representing a time-dependent response of the tissue types may represent at least one of a cell repair model and a tumour diffusion model.

摘要: Embodiments of the present invention provide a system and a method for attaching peripheral devices (such as collimators and electron applicators) to a system such as a radiotherapy system or radiography system. By re-using the lifting mechanism of the patient support to lift the peripheral device vertically, the invention reduces the need for heavy manual lifting.
