A connector (71) is provided to electrically couple external circuitry to electrical components within the cartridge.

An improved head assembly having a staggered leading edge step scheme for tuned air entrainment for improved head performance in higher capacity disk drives. The head assembly having a staggered leading edge step scheme improves the performance of the heads by controlling an entrainment of air thereby forming a desired air bearing between a disk surface and the longitudinal rails of each slider of the head assembly thereby forcing the storage media to comply in an advantageous way (e.g., conform) to cause intimacy at the sensor. The improved head assembly having a staggered leading edge step scheme allows the flying characteristics of the head to be controlled by providing a first rail including a sensor for interfacing with the disk media and having a relatively long leading edge step that does not entrain air well and a second rail not having a sensor and having a relatively short leading edge step that entrains air better than the long leading edge step of the first rail. The first rail having a relatively poor leading edge step for entraining air as compared to the second rail allows the sensor to interface (e.g., contact) with the disk media, while the second rail having a relatively good leading edge for the entrainment of air allows the second rail and the balance of the slider to fly over the surface of the disk. This helps to improve the performance of the head assembly for higher capacity disk drives. In addition, the present invention provides for forming one leading edge step differently from the other and for varying the dimensions of the staggered leading edge steps to further control the flying characteristics of the head assemblies.

Methods are provided for detecting transient write errors based on difficulty in reading pre-recorded information on a disk such as servo marks, ID marks, etc. In the event of such a difficulty, the disk drive will automatically read the data it just wrote. If errors were encountered during this write process, the disk drive will either rewrite the data or report errors to the host system which will in most cases issue a rewrite operation. The methods also distinguish between transient errors and permanent media damage and reallocate permanent disk damages to prevent further loss.

A light source illuminates the marker and the marker emits phosphorescence. A photosensor detects the emitted illuminance, and the decay time is determined. The decay time is checked to provide identification of different types or generations of data storage cartridges or provides a secure keying mechanism for authorized access to proprietary software.

The mark is read by writing first data to the body in the region of the mark, and reading second data from the body in such region. The written first data is not accepted where the portions of the body are indelibly altered. Accordingly, the read second data corresponds to the written first data with segments thereof missing. The missing segments of the first data correspond to the portions of the body indelibly altered. In a preferred embodiment, the storage media comprises a magnetic rotatable disk having a substantially planar substrate and a magnetizable layer deposited thereon. The reading and writing are therefore performed magnetically.

A read/write head for use in a disk drive having chamfered surfaces reducing possible damage to the head assembly and/or media during loading and unloading of heads form media surface. In an inadvertent collision between the media and head assembly, the media may become displaced, possibly damaging the head suspension assembly or critical electrical connections between the head assembly and media drive. Similarly, such a collision may impart irreversible physical damage to the recording medium, making the data on the medium unrecoverable. The present invention comprises chamfered surface, preferably formed into the head, which reduces the likelihood of damage caused to the head assembly or media in the event of an inadvertent collision. These chamfered surfaces deflect the media to its proper position such that damage is minimized during collision.
