摘要:
For use in a robotically operated workstation , apparatus for installing fasteners, for example tubular blind rivets, comprises a pneumatically operated fastener installation tool (16). The tool 16 has a part in the form of a headed mandrel (22) which is loaded with and carries a finite supply of the fasteners, a gripping and pulling actuator (26) and a nose assembly (21) which provides an abutmentl (18) for supporting successive rivets while the mandrel is pulled to draw its head through and set the rivet. For reloading the tool with further fasteners, after use, the apparatus includes a nest (96 b ) for detaching and receiving the mandrel (22), together with the nose assembly (21), from the actuator (26), and a similar nest (96 a ) provided with another nose assembly and another mandrel fully loaded with fasteners which it presents and attaches to the actuator (26). An indexing table (110) interchanges the nests (96 a ) and (96 b ) between a station for reception and presentation of mandrels with nose assemblies, and a reloading station at which further fasteners are loaded on to a mandrel by feeding and transfer means (150). An alternative or supplementary reloading system includes a nest (90) for reception of a used mandrel and nose assembly from the tool (16), and at least one other nest (91) containing another nose assembly and a mandrel carrying a full load of fasteners for presentation to a tool actuator from which the mandrel and nose assembly have been removed.

A hand-held pneumatically-powered breakstem rivet placing tool comprises a pulling head (12) driven by a pneumatic piston and cylinder device (13). The drive is transmitted by means of a chain (15), one end (45) of which is secured to the body (11) of the tool and the other end (49) of which is secured to the piston rod (35) of the pneumatic device. Between its two ends the chain forms a loop which passes over a roller (52) which is connected to the pulling head (12) by means of a link mechanism (54, 58). When the pneumatic device (13) is actuated, the movable end (49) of the chain is pulled down, thus pulling the roller (52) and driving the head (12) to place a rivet. The roller (52) is carried on the top of a plunger (56) which is continuously urged upwards by air pressure in the cylinder (63) in which it slides, thereby to return the mechanism to its original position after a rivet has been placed.

A breakstem rivet installation tool includes an airflow ejector for ejecting broken-off stems through a rear pipe (23) mounted on the tool housing (11). The ejector is provided by the annular gap (28) between the front-end of the rear pipe (23) and the rear-end part (26) of an extension pipe (25) mounted on the reciprocable stem-pulling draw rod (13). In order to adjust the rate of air-flow through the ejector, the rear pipe (23) is axially adjustable to vary the size of the annular gap (28). To this end, the pipe (23) is screw-threaded into the housing, and its position can be locked by a lock nut (62). The range of adjustment of the ejector flow includes complete shutting off the air flow.

Riveting apparatus of the type in which an elongated mandrel (30), having an enlarged head at one end and loaded with a plurality of the tubular rivets (40) forming a column of rivets on the mandrel, is gripped by gripping means (43) at or near the end remote from the head, and reciprocated relative to an abutment (32) by relative reciprocation between the gripping means (43) and the abutment (32), the rivets (40) in the column being fed forwardly along the mandrel (30) so that the leading rivet nearest the mandrel head is positioned between the mandrel head and the abutment (32) and can then be set by moving the mandrel (30) rearwardly relative to the abutment (32) so as to draw the head of the mandrel through the bore of the rivet (40) while the rivet is supported by the abutment (32), includes pneumatically operated rivet-feeding means (55) for feeding rivets (40) forwardly along the mandrel (30), and valve means (P.1.2.) for shutting off the supply of air to the rivet feeding means (55) thereby to disable it, and the valve means (P.1.2.) is responsive to the presence or absence of a mandrel (30) in the gripping means (43), the valve means (P.1.2.) being closed in the absence of a mandrel (30) and open only in the presence of a mandrel (30).

Members of an assembly, a first of which has an aperture (80) and a second of (84) which is of deformable sheet-like material, are fastened together by piercing and deforming the second member (84) using a punch and die to provide a pierced aperture (70) having a peripheral wall of helical (76) form analogous to a screw-thread, assembling the members (80,84) together with the apertures aligned, inserting a tubular fastener (90) having a head (94) and a shank (92) into the apertures so that the head (94) abuts a face of the first member (80) and the shank (92) extends through the second member (84), and then expanding at least part of the shank (92) within the pierced aperture (70) of the second member (84) and thereby causing the peripheral wall of the pierced aperture (70) to impress a helical peripheral groove into the external surface of the shank (92) of the fastener (90). The shank (92) can be expanded by pulling a tapering mandrel head (104) into or through it. The fastener (90) is made to facilitate its removal by unscrewing from the fastened assembly by providing or forming wrenching surfaces in its bore or on its head for engagement with a key, screwdriver, spanner or the like.
