The screen bars (2) adjacent to each other form longitudinal slits (5) therebetween and the screen bars are stopped by a ring (R). In the screen bars, the longitudinal slits (5) are divided in the middle, by a member (3) having a width (T) larger than a thickness (t) of the ring (R), in a direction transversely crossing the longitudinal direction of the screen bar (2). Instead of the slits being composed of screen bars, openings can also be formed in a cylindrical screen plate. Accordingly, in the cylindrical screen of the invention, a mat formed on the screen can be easily peeled off.

A screen apparatus is formed of a tank for receiving a papermaking material, a cylindrical first screen for partitioning the tank into a first chamber and a second chamber, an annular second screen disposed in the first chamber, and a rotating member disposed in the first chamber. The first screen has a closed end at one side, an open end at the other side, and a plurality of first openings in a circumferential portion thereof. The annular second screen has second openings in a plate portion and a large opening at the center thereof. The annular second screen is disposed adjacent to the first screen at the side of the closed end, and the rotating member faces the large opening of the second screen and the closed end of the first screen. Also, the rotating member includes first agitating members facing the second screen, and second agitating members facing the second screen. When the papermaking material is supplied to the first chamber, foreign materials contained in the papermaking material are removed by the first and second screens, and refined papermaking material is discharged through the second chamber. Clinging and crushing of the foreign materials can be prevented.

An end surface of the one free end of the driving shaft is located in the first paper material supply passage, and includes projections to closely face a portion of the first paper material passage to prevent the material flowing through the first material supply passage from entering between the portion and the projections. Therefore, on the end surface of the driving shaft, pressure caused by the material is reduced to equalize spaces between the respective rotating and stationary blades.

A papermaking screen of the invention is formed of a first annular supporting member having a first annular recess formed at one side, and a second annular supporting member having a second annular recess at one side. The second annular recess has a size corresponding to that of the first annular recess and orients toward the first annular recess. A plurality of space holding members is fixed to the first and second annular supporting members to establish a predetermined distance therebetween. Also, a plurality of elongated members is situated in the first and second annular recesses and arranged parallel to each other between the first and second annular supporting members. At least one of two elongated members situated adjacent to each other has a space forming device thereon relative to the other of the two elongated members. When the elongated members are arranged parallel to and contacted to each other, a space is formed between the elongated members situated adjacent to each other. The elongated members can be easily disposed between the first and second annular supporting members.
