A method and system for media independent handover (MIH) using an Ethernet operation, administration and maintenance (OAM) protocol are disclosed. Link connectivity between a user equipment (UE) and an MIH point of service (PoS) is monitored by using an OAM protocol. An OAM trigger indicating a link status is mapped to an MIH event and the MIH event is reported for potential handover. The OAM protocol may be IEEE 802.3ah or 802.1ag.

A method and system for integrating media independent handover (MIH) under IEEE 802.21 and unlicensed mobile access (UMA) are disclosed. A public land mobile network (PLMN) and an unlicensed mobile access network (UMAN) are concurrently deployed. UMA is supported such that a multi-mode wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) may access the UMAN to receive PLMN services through the UMAN. MIH entities are included both in the WTRU and the UMAN and the MIH entity of the WTRU monitors handover events and information and generates a handover trigger for handover between the PLMN and the UMAN. The MIH entity in the UMAN interacts with the MIH entity of the WTRU to report a remote event, handover information and command.

A method and system for conveying media independent handover (MIH) capability information are disclosed. A wireless communication system includes a plurality of wireless networks deployed under different wireless communication protocols. A multi-mode wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) may perform a handover from one wireless network to another for continuous reception of services. The wireless network sends a message to the WTRU which indicates whether the wireless network supports MIH services and a supported MIH mode. The WTRU receives the message and makes a handover decision based on the message.
