The present artificial insemination instrument may include a single use, hollow, elongate, metal pipette and a single disposable syringe that is not toxic to bovine sperm. The apparatus is used with any type of diluent that is not toxic to bovine sperm. In various embodiments, a technician may use non-sorted reduced sperm count semen straws from a bull stud, cut an unsorted semen straw into several pieces to use one piece at a time per cow, thaw one straw and mix the non-sorted semen with diluent, or use reduced sperm count semen straws filled with sex sorted semen by the manufacturer. A procedure is disclosed to use the artificial insemination instrument, reduced sperm count semen from any of the aforementioned sources, a non-toxic syringe, and a diluent to achieve conception rates at least as good as conventional prior art device and procedure conception rates.

The device has an elastic insemination sheath amassed in compressed state between the nozzle passage and the forward portion of center orifice of catheter tube, where the rear end of the elastic insemination sheath is secured to the front part of nozzle, characterized in which the catheter tube and nozzle are inserted into the uterus of animal with the nozzle positioned posterior to the first cervical ring, and by the pressure of semen dispenser squeezing in semen from the rear end of catheter tube, the extension member of the soft elastic insemination sheath instantaneously extend outward from the front part of nozzle and extends freely along the cervical tract to reach uterus, where coupled with uterine contraction, semen fluid squeezed into the extension member of insemination sheath is expelled into the uterus or the two ducts to uterine horns via the prearranged slits on the front part of extension member. Such design not only reduces the backflow of semen, it also offers the economic benefit of using minimal semen and improves the efficiency of artificial insemination.

The present invention relates to a device for inseminating animals, mainly sows. This device includes a catheter (1) for forwarding the sperm which is introduced in the vagina. The catheter comprises a bead (2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4) in the area of the end to be introduced (1.1), as well as an essentially sleeve-shaped hollow body (6; 16) to be introduced at the start of the vagina and through which the bead and the catheter can be pushed into the vagina. In order to prevent sperm reflux in a simple manner, the bead (2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4) is made of cellular foam or the like. Before being introduced into the organic cavity, the bead can be compressed on a cross section which is smaller than the lumen of the organic cavity. The bead further expands, after an expansion time as it reaches the end position corresponding to the uterus of the animal, until the animal's organic cavity is occluded by a soft retractable plug (20).

Coupled to the rearward end (43) of the depositing chamber (30) is an embryo or semen packaging unit (40). The tubular depositing chamber (30) has an end (32) that has an aperture (34) to permit the flow of semen (11) out of the depositing chamber (30) and into the uterus. The invention also involves a method employing the apparatus (10) described.
