A solid drawing material containing at least a resin component, a wax component, a pigment, titanium dioxide, and a filler, wherein the resin component includes rosin and/or modified rosin in an amount that is within the range of 0.5 to 20 wt%, and the wax component includes a glycerin fatty acid ester and/or pentaerythritol fatty acid ester, both fatty acid esters having a melting point of 45°C or higher, in an amount that is within the range of 8 to 50 wt%.

The present invention provides a drawing tool for an artist, draughtsman or hobbyist etc., the drawing tool comprising a handle and a retaining means disposed on the handle. The retaining means being adapted to releasably retain an elongate drawing material, such as a graphite lead, in an orientation substantially transverse to the axis of the handle. In use, manipulation of the handle and selective application of pressure to the elongate drawing material enables the drawing material to be applied to a drawing surface to thereby control the degree of shading on the drawing surface. The hand tool has particular application to reliably rendering gradients when shading with graphite and chalk etc. To be accompanied, when published, by Figure 1 of the drawings. deposit varying thicknesses of graphite on the paper to modify the gradient of the shading.

Pencils having a core within a barrel, the barrel being formed from a blend of at least two transparent polymers which are incompatible and form separate phases within the blend, the polymers having refractive indices which differ by not more than 0.02 when measured under substantially the same conditions. Blends for use in producing the barrels of such pencils have shown good sharpenability combined with high transparency. The latter enables the core of the pencils to be clearly visible through their barrels.
