Abstract:
Abstract:
The device of present invention is used for cutting and recovery of a selected gel piece from a larger gel mass. The gel piece suitably contains molecules that will be used in further work. The preferred device is made up of at least two parts: a hollow member with a distal end terminating in a cutting edge, a proximal end, and a lumen in between the proximal and distal ends; and a piston member. The lumen part of the hollow member close to the proximal end has a larger cross section than a lumen part close to the distal end. The piston body has at least a first body that fits snugly in the lumen part having the larger cross section and a second body is longer than length of the lumen part with a smaller cross section and fits within the smaller cross section portion of the hollow tube, creates reduced pressure when moved towards proximal end of the hollow tube is disposed within the lumen. After cutting a selection portion of the gel mass with the cutting end of the hollow member, and thereby forcing a cut portion of the gel mass into the smaller cross section portion of the lumen, movement of the piston away from the cutting edge reduces the pressure in the smaller cross section of the lumen and this serves to keep the cut gel piece in lumen of the hollow member. The cut gel can then be ejected by reversing the movement of the piston. In a preferred embodiment, the cut gel portion can be recovered.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method and a device for manipulating samples, in particular tissue samples, comprising at least one needle (3) for punching samples out of preparations (5), in particular at defined points on prepared tissue sections and a control device (13) for controlling the needle (3). The aim of the invention is to provide a method and a device, which allow a simple selection of desired punching positions on the preparations (5) and enable a rapid, simple and automatic manipulation of samples. To achieve this, the device is equipped with a camera (14) for capturing images of the surface of the preparations (5), in addition to a unit for superimposing the captured images of the preparations (5) on digital, microscopic images of sections of said preparations (5) that are stored in a memory, a display (12) for reproducing the superimposed images and a unit for applying markings to determine the defined punching positions, said unit being connected to the control device (13).
Abstract:
This invention generally relates to products and processes used to determine the presence of Enterobacteriaceae in a sample and particularly relates to a bacterial culture medium which may be used in products and processes to allow early detection and enumeration of Enterobacteriaceae in a sample. The bacterial culture medium which facilitates the early detection and enumeration of Enterobacteriaceae contains a selected amount of glucose, pH indicator and buffer which prevent diffusion of colored indicator zones associated with growing bacteria in the medium.
Abstract:
A simple and precise instrument for constructing tissue arrays. The instrument includes multiple punches (1, 2) mounted on a punch platform (26), the platform displaceable between precisely defined positions. Mechanical detentes or stops (12) are provided which mechanically arrest the movement of the punch platform in the precisely defined positions. This arrangement greatly saves time and improves accuracy over use of conventional precision linear positioning means. By the simple step of moving the punch platform (26) from a first position to a second position, either punch (1, 2) can be quickly brought into operating position.
Abstract:
A device for culturing microorganisms and its use are described. The claimed device comprises a substrate having a top side, a pedestal mounted on the top side of the substrate and comprising a non-absorbent culture surface, a flexible cover sheet attached to the substrate and comprising a bottom surface, the cover sheet being configured to cover the culture surface, and a culture medium deposited on one or more surfaces selected from: the culture surface, and the cover sheet bottom surface. An aqueous sample is spread and contained by the claimed device without additional equipment or manipulation by the end user.
Abstract:
Subculturing apparatus (30) comprises a receptacle for supporting a growth medium (5) for culturing of a microorganism. The microorganism is entrained to grow in a predetermined direction, towards an end of the growth medium (50), where a further apparatus (30) can be placed adjacent thereto. The microorganism can then grow into the growth medium of the further apparatus. The method of storing a microorganism for use in microbiological processes is also described, as is a method of fermentation of a stored microorganism for the production of biochemicals such as pharmaceuticals or agrochemicals.
Abstract:
This invention generally relates to products and processes used to determine the presence of microbes in a sample and particularly relates to a conditioned culture medium which may be used in products and processes to allow early detection and enumeration of such microbes. The conditioned culture medium preferably is a filtered broth made by incubating viable microbes with gelatin, casein or animal peptones as well as lactose, sodium chloride, bile salts, guar gum and an indicator.
Abstract:
A device for diagnostic use, aimed to allow, in addition to the counting, also the isolation of the bacterial colonies, comprises a container (2) provided with well means (3, 4; 3, 6) having an elongated shape suitable for containing a culture medium (5) of conventional type; the well means (3, 4; 3, 6) have a non rectilinear lay-out in plan view.
Abstract:
An integument (50) and related process for the culturing and growing of living organic material (74). The integument (50) includes a cellule (72) made of a gas permeable, liquid and contaminant impermeable membrane (12) for completely enclosing and sealing the culture (74) from biological contaminants in the ambient environment. The membrane (12) allows gas exchange between the living organic material (74) and the ambient environment to provide enhanced growth and the prevention of contamination.
