A plasma ignition plug for an internal combustion engine has a thorium alloyed tungsten anode separated from a vanadium- or beryllium-alloyed copper cathode by a boron nitride ceramic powder insulator. A generally semi-spherical titanium emitter is electrically coupled to the anode and disposed within an end of the insulator so as to form an annular gap with a torus on the end of the cathode. The surface of the emitter protrudes slightly beyond the rim of the torus on the cathode. High amplitude pulses driven into the anode arc across the annular gap to the cathode at more than twenty-four spots simultaneously, generating a plasma ignition front.

Said device is characterised in that one of the high voltage switches (13; 13a to 13n) is associated with at least one sparking plug and is moved into a conductive, connected state by a first driving signal of the driving circuit. The spark current (I2) of at least one sparking plug (3; 3a to 3n) moves through said high voltage switch when it is in a connected state, and said high voltage switch is arranged in such a manner that it remains in a conductive state without further driving until the spark stream falls below a certain value (holding current).

An ignition secondary sensor is provided which is disposed in a high voltage path between an ignition coil and a spark plug for use with a detecting circuit for detecting ignition current and ion current flowing through a spark plug. The sensor comprises an ignition path connected in series with the high voltage path and having a pair of reverse current preventing diodes and a detection path connected to a spark plug side end portion of the ignition path and having a pair of current detecting diodes. A path portion of the detection path on the side of the current detecting diodes opposite to the ignition path and a path portion of the ignition path connecting between the reverse current preventing diodes are capacitively coupled. The detecting circuit is connected to the sensor for detecting the ignition current (ignition timing) on the basis of current flowing into the sensor therefrom and the ion current (combustion timing) on the basis of current flowing from the sensor thereinto.

A respective power semiconductor switch (M1, M2, M3) is provided for each ignition coil (20) of an internal combustion engine. Each such switch (M1, M2, M3) has a first main electrode (C) for coupling the primary winding (20a) of the associated ignition coil (20) to a first voltage supply line (1), and a control electrode (G) coupled to a respective ignition control line (lgn1, lgn2, lgn3) for rendering these switches (M1, M2, M3) conducting in a given sequence. A further semiconductor device (M4) has first and second main electrodes (d and s) coupled between second main electrodes (E) of the power semiconductor switches (M1, M2, M3) and a second voltage supply line (2), and a control electrode (g) for a drive signal controlling the current flow through the device (M4). A current sensing arrangement (Rs) senses the current flowing through this further device (M4). A control device (30) common to the switches (M1, M2, M3) of the coils (20) controls the drive signal to the control electrode (g) of the further device (M4) to limit the current through this further device (M4) to a predetermined value and then to turn off this further device (M4) so as to render a conducting one of the switches (M1, M2, M3) non-conducting to initiate sparking in the cylinder associated with that one switch.
