A needle free medical connector includes a housing with a first port and a second port. The connector also includes a piston element defining a fluid passageway between the first and second ports. The piston element is movable between flow and non-flow positions. The piston element has a compressible section having a variable inner width that forms a part of the flow path through the connector. As the piston is compressed to the flow position, the compressible section self-expands in width thereby maintaining or increasing the volume of the fluid passageway through the connector. The compressible section has a configuration permitting the continuous flow of fluid through its entirety.

A medical adapter (166) for interconnecting a pierceable site with a male fluid connector, comprising: a body having a first end and a second end; a female connection site (180) located at the first end of the body, having a fluid flow port; a sharpened cannula (168) located at the second end of the body, the cannula having a sharpened tip; an internal fluid channel interconnecting the fluid flow port of the female connection site with the sharpened cannula so that fluid may flow between the two; a first shroud (178) mounted to the body and surrounding the sharpened cannula except at the sharpened tip; a second shroud (170) mounted to the body and surrounding the sharpened cannula, the second shroud having a length at least as great as the sharpened cannula.

A system and method for communicating and validating patient information including medication delivery information in a care-giving facility is provided. A medical transaction carrier is used to communicate information regarding medication delivery and other patient information between a control system in communication with the care-giving facility's other information systems and a patient specific asset such as an infusion pump. All information carried by the medical transaction carrier is validated both at the patient specific asset and at the control system. This validation allows for positive control of all transactions even if a medical transaction carrier is lost. The medical transaction carrier may be a smartcard, a PDA such as a Palm™ Pilot, laptop computer, pager, mobile phone, or other device capable of storing and communicating information. The system may use either wired or wireless connections to communicate information between the components of the system.

A wrist mount apparatus (30) for placing a tissue stress sensor (48) in engagement with the tissue overlaying an artery for use in a system for noninvasively determining the intra-arterial blood pressure of a patient comprises a base portion (32) and a transducer platform (34) which is pivotally and slidingly engaged therewith the apparatus to be used on either wrist of the wearer. A force overload system (66, 74) is provided to protect the wearer from excessive forces applied to the wrist tissue by the apparatus. A quick disconnect feature (134, 136) allows the tissue stress sensor (48) to be readily removed from the wrist mount apparatus (30). A disposable, anticontamination film (144) is used with each application of the wrist mount apparatus (30) to minimize transferring contaminants from one wearer to another and preventing a build up of materials on the sensor's face.

An air-in-line sensing apparatus (10) for use with a parenteral fluid administration set (34) to detect the passage of air through a fluid conduit (12). The apparatus comprises a first housing having a first arcuate section mounting a first transducer adjacent the first arcuate section and a second housing having a second arcuate section mounting a second transducer adjacent the second arcuate section. The first and second housings are independently movable relative to each other so that when the housings are moved towards one another, the first and second arcuate sections capture a length of administration set tubing therebetween (44) providing secure intimate contact therewith. A signal may be generated from one of such transducers, passed through the fluid conduit and received by the other transducer to detect whether the conduit is carrying air.
