摘要: An apparatus and method for detecting and locating electric current leakage paths along the length of an electrically conducting elongate member is disclosed. The apparatus has variable supply means (8, 10) and means for monitoring the impedance of the member (9, 11), the supply means being operable to drive current in opposite directions along the member, so that a movable node can be established, the node being where the net change in potential between the member and its surroundings is substantially zero. When the apparatus is in use, the position of the node is varied by varying the current driven along the member and the resultant impedance is monitored by the monitoring means (9, 11), whereby the position of the node at which there is a local minimum in the impedance indicates the position of a current leakage path.

摘要: A drogue assembly (10) for in-flight refuelling includes a circumferential array of triangular support arms which carry a drogue parachute (29) which extends circumferentially around their shorter sides. Each support arm is pivoted and mounted on a pivot pin (19) at its apex for pivotal movement in a radial direction. At least alternate ones of the support arms carry leaf springs which extend into pockets (51) formed in the drogue parachute (29). The leaf springs act on the drogue parachute (29) in opposition to air pressure loading on it in flight so that it tends to increase the chord angle of the drogue parachute (29) from the leading edge. Hence the effective area of the drogue parachute in flight is varied automatically above a certain predetermined minimum which depends on the dimensions of the trailing edge so it is reduced as air speed is increased and vice versa.

摘要: A data transmission system for use in extracting data from a downhole location in a well is disclosed. The well has electrically conductive downhole structure (2, C) which together with an earth return forms a signal circuit which is used to transmit data. A current source (34) is provided at the wellhead for applying a reference signal to the downhole structure (2, C). Effective impedance varying means (48) are located downhole and used for varying the effective impedance of the signal circuit in dependence on data to be transmitted to the wellhead. Monitoring means (35) for monitoring changes in the reference signal caused by varying the effective impedance of the signal circuit are located at the wellhead. Monitoring these changes allows data to be extracted. A separate reference earthing point may be provided for the monitoring means to alleviate the effect of imperfections in the earth connection (S) used to complete the signal circuit.

摘要: A bimorph piezoelectric flapper element (12) is mounted by one end in a valve casing (11) so that it extends into a valve chamber (10) as a cantilever. It tapers to the unsupported end on which a fluorosilicone blocking plate (16) is mounted. An outlet port (18) is formed by a tubular boss which projects into the valve chamber (10) and which tapers to a fine annular rim which is formed around the mouth of its bore at its tip. The blocking plate (16) is normally held by the flapper element (12) seated on the tip of the tubular boss to close the outlet port (18), the tip making an indentation in the fluorosilicone whereby to form a 'bite' seal. The blocking plate (16) is unseated by the application of a low voltage to the bimorph piezoelectric element (12). The valve is suitable for hydraulic fluids and may be operated by optical power.

L'élément obturateur (6) possède un joint frontal élastomère et conique (7) adapté pour se détendre lors de l'accouplement, et les deux éléments obturateurs (3 et 6) viennent se placer à côté des joints toriques accouplés (5 et 8) pour permettre le passage du fluide. La configuration est telle que le joint frontal conique (7) est aplati par la pression ramenant les éléments obturateurs (3 et 6) sur leurs sièges, afin que l'espace annulaire et conique compris entre ledit joint et la face plate de l'élément obturateur (3) soit comblé, et que le fluide situé entre lesdits éléments obturateurs soit exprimé vers une zone située en amont des joints toriques (5 et 8).
