A stress in an optical fiber due to a deformation of the optical fiber is surely alleviated without damaging the optical fiber. For this purpose, the optical fiber coated with a coating material is treated with heat for a short time (about 0.1 seconds to 30 seconds) at a temperature higher than the glass transition temperature of the glass of which the optical fiber is composed. Otherwise, the optical fiber coated with the coating and bent into an arbitrary shape such as a circle is uniformly irradiated with a light having a photon energy near the edge of the absorption attending upon an electronic transition of the glass of which the optical fiber is composed.

The mineral fiber forming apparatus (10) having electrodes (14) for heating heat softenable mineral material to form a molten mineral mass is disclosed. Organically-coated glass fiber scrap and cullet are supplied to a vessel (12) providing the heat softenable mineral material. An impeller (16) turbulently mixes the molten mineral mass dispersing batch into the molten mineral mass and converting water in the molten mineral bath to steam. Molten mineral material formed by the appartus (10) includes small seeds and gaseous occlusions. The molten mineral material is fed from an outlet port (24) in the vessel (12) to a rotary spinner (30) which forms hollow mineral fibers (32) having gaseous occlusions of between 1 % and 10 % by volume by centrifuging the molten mineral material.

The insulating wool production plant (for example for glass wool and/or rock wool) of reduced environmental impact comprises at least one forming machine (32), at least one polymerization oven (33), first air treatment means (34) and second air treatment means (35). The total air load (37) of the forming machine and the total air load (40) of the polymerization oven are fed to the first air treatment means (34), from the buffer vessel (49) of which there is drawn off a recycle air load (43). Both the forming machine (32) and the polymerization oven (33) introduce infiltration air loads (39) and (42) which result in the need for a bleed air load (44) to be discharged to atmosphere through the second air treatment means (35).

A method and an apparatus for displacing of particles on and into a loose layer of material, for instance a mineral wool layer (2) by means of an apparatus comprising means, for instance one or more conveyors (4, 10) for continuously advancing the layer of material and means for subjecting the layer of material to a constant force and concurrently therewith an oscillation energy within the acoustic area. The constant force may be applied in that the conveyor is mounted sloping downwards in the advancing direction whereby the gravety force is the constant force, or it may be a flow of air which is blowing against and which is allowed to pass through the layer of material. The oscillation energy may be provided by means of one or more sound emitting means (9, 14) mounted above the layer of material and preferably co-operating with a collection means (7, 12) mounted underneath the layer of material. By the method and the apparatus particles may be expelled from the layer of material or particles supplied to the surface of the layer of material may be forced into and distributed in the interior of the layer of material or both operations may be carried through concurrently.

Process for the concentration of fibrous material in a mixture thereof with non-fibrous material, by subjecting an aqueous suspension of the mixture to centrifugal force in a hydrocylone to obtain an overflow enriched in fibre and an underflow of reduced fibre content, the aqueous suspension which is admitted to the hydrocylone being the fibre-enriched fraction which results from a preliminary classification in which an aqueous suspension of lowerfibre: non-fibre ratio is submitted to flow under conditions which bring about settling out under ordinary gravitational force of material reduced in fibre content and formation of a fibre-enriched fraction above it. In the process, the underflow flow from the hydrocyclone is incorporated in the aqueous suspension which is submitted to the preliminary classification. The process, which keeps to a minimum the amount of valuable fibre lost, is specially applicable to the concentration of fibres in the fibrous products (mineral wool) formed by disintegrating silicate and like mineral melts, which commonly contain relatively high proportion of granular material ('shot').

An electrical discharge, suitable for heating optical fibers for processing, is made in a controlled partial vacuum, such that saturation of available ionizable gas molecules is reached. The workpiece temperature is thereby made to be a stably controlled function of the absolute air pressure and is insensitive to other conditions. A system and method accomplishing the foregoing are provided.
