Apparatus and method for reducing wire (4) and other elongated components in section by passing them through a reservoir (16) containing a substance which will act as a lubricating-and pressurising medium and then, surrounded by the medium but without solid-to-solid contact, through a cavity formed in two parts (11,12) which meet at a step (13) where the radius diminishes sharply. The least section of the cavity exceeds the section of the unreduced component. The reservoir may be provided with a heater (20) whereby the medium (19) may be melted after being introduced to the reservoir in solid form. The component may be either drawn orthrust, and may undergo a change in shape as well as in the size of its section as it is reduced.

Disclosed is an improved process for preparing a composite compact wherein a mass of abrasive crystals, a mass of metal carbide, and a bonding medium are subjected to a high-temperature/high pressure process for providing a composite compact. The sintered carbide mass supports the mass of abrasive crystals and bonding or catalyst metal, and the abrasive crystal grains are directly bonded to adjacent crystal grains in the mass thereof. Such improved process comprises disposing the mass of abrasive crystals in layers wherein the coarsest layer is closest to the carbide mass and is composed of crystals having a largest dimension of between about 75 and 500 µm and the finest layer is disposed farthest away in the carbide mass and is composed of crystals having a largest dimension of less than 10 µm. The abrasive crystals are selected from the group consisting of diamond and cubic boron nitride and preferably are diamond; the metal carbide preferably is tungsten carbide; and the bonding metal preferably is cobalt. The resulting improved composite compact also is disclosed.

The blank is converted into a wire-drawing die composite by providing the compact with a centrally located hole extending therethrough.

The blank has a thermal conductivity higher than a thermal conductivity of the die case. The blank has an upstream-side end surface and a downstream-side end surface in a wire drawing direction, the die hole is provided between the upstream-side end surface and the downstream-side end surface, and the downstream-side end surface is exposed from the die case.
