A collector for an electric motor consisting of flat copper lamella elements which are distributed on the periphery and are anchored in an insulating carrier made from a plastic pressed material with internal web-type elements exhibiting undercuts. At least one armouring ring with a clamping ring made of an electrically conducting material are included in the carrier which engages with the inner web-type elements on extensions in the region of the undercuts and which is made of an insulating material at least on the inner side thereof facing the extensions. In order to simplify production and obtain improved quality, a single piece structure is provided for the entire armouring ring, exhibiting high mechanical and thermal resilience, whereupon the clamping ring part is formed by a winding of filaments surrounding the supporting ring part.

Face commutators (30) with substantially planar commutating segments (31) that are bonded to a conductive member (33) which is attached to an insulating hub (41). The hub (41) has an axial bore (43) designed to be press-fitted on the armature shaft (23) of a motor with an inner wall section (43) that is deformed by the motor shaft (23). The hub (41) is configured with an inner wall section that has contact sections (46) and relieft sections (47), wherein the contact sections are closer to the central axis of the hub than the radius of the shaft and which are deformed when the hub is pressed on the shaft. While the relief sections (47), which do not come in contact with the shaft, allow the commutator to adapt to the shaft and provide room for material that is displaced from the contact sections. The hub (41) and, to a limited extent, the metallic conductive elements (33), absord any stresses and deformation from press-fitting the hub onto the motor shaft without transmitting undue stress and deformation to the interface betweenthe conductive elements and the carbon communtating segments (31).

The invention concerns reinforcing rings comprising a bearing ring (3) that is made of an insulating material which is compression proof even at high working temperatures and a metal clamping ring (4) into which the bearing ring is fitted to form a double body; said reinforcing rings are used in electric motor collectors with lamellar inner webs (6) that are used for bracing the individual lamellae, that project inward running at least predominantly parallel to the collector axis (2) and that have undercut surfaces (8, 7) for rear engagement by the reinforcing rings. In this way reinforcing rings can be made from two subrings that are simple to manufacture and simple to press together, or by using an injection process to insert the bearing ring in the clamping ring, thus forming a unit of extremely high thermal and mechanical load-bearing capacity and giving the collector a very high stability and fatigue strength.

In a slip ring arrangement for the rotor of an electrical three-phase current generator for motor vehicles or the like, it is proposed to link the end of the slip ring holder to the rotor or armature spindle by pushing it over a smaller-diameter journal of the rotor spindle and securing it axially by making it a force fit or, for example, by means of splines, where plastic-coated busbars run from the slip rings in grooves in the armature spindle beneath the ball-bearing and their broadened ends are soldered to the excitation winding connecting wires. Alternatively, the slip ring holder may be secured to the journal or a bearing neck pressed into the end of the rotor spindle by a clip, while prestressed leaf springs ensure axial clearance. In both cases, the flange of the slip ring holder pushed over the armature spindle and the fan fitted at the same place may be in one piece, whereby the metal parts of the fan are laid in the extrusion or compression mould for making the plastic bearing housing together with slip rings and busbars, and the housing is formed around them.

A method for assembling an armature (45) for use in a dynamoelectric machine with the armature (45) including a commutator (61) having a bore (65), and a core (49) secured about a shaft (51) intermediate a pair of opposite shaft extensions (53,53a), a hardenable adhesive material and an actuator therefor. In practicing this method, the commutator bore (65) is coated with the activator, and the commutator (61) is located in a preselected position. The hardenable adhesive material is applied about a part of one (53a) of the opposite shaft extensions, and the one opposite shaft extension (53a) part is disposed within the bore (65) of the commutator (61) in its preselected position thereby to communicate the hardenable adhesive material and the activator. Only the core (49) and shaft (51) are rotated to arrange the core (49) in a preselected rotated position with respect to the commutator (61) in its preselected position, and such rotation of the core (49) and shaft (51) ensures the mixing of the communicated hardenable adhesive material and its activator.

A commutator (10) for a motor is disclosed which includes a plurality of commutator segments (12) arranged in a cylindric array (14) such that the array has a cylindrical outer periphery (20) and two axial ends. An annular recess (26, 28) is formed adjacent each end (22, 24) of the array so that a portion of each commutator segment (12) forms a part of the radially inner wall of each recess. Two or more rings (34, 36) constructed of an insulating material are provided and one or more rings are press fit into each recess so that the rings (34, 36) exert a radially inward force on the commutator segment (12). The anchoring portions of the commutator segments (12) are then encapsulated with a settable and electrically insulating material (40), such as phenolic. Upon hardening and curing, the phenolic secures the commutator segments (12) together. At the same time, the radially inward force exerted by the rings (34, 36) on the commutator segments (12) serves to stabilize the commutator segments (12) against movement relative to each other during high speed rotation of the commutator (10). A method for manufacturing the commutator is also disclosed.
