The invention relates to expanded porous thermoplastic polymer membranes which are characterised by a proportion of at least 80 % open cells and a pore volume of at least 75 %. The invention also relates to a method and a device for producing said membranes. The membranes can be used for microfiltration and macrofiltration of fluids in industry, laboratories and protection of the environment. According to the inventive method, a polymer melt is conveyed through an extruder under pressure, whereby it is loaded in an injection stage with cell builders with different diffusion rates in comparison with said polymer melt, and it is pressed through a die to form a membrane. In an additional mixing step which occurs upstream from the die, the temperature of the single-phase melt is reduced to a temperature which is lower than the original processing temperature and/or the pressure thereof is increased. The cell builders enable the polymer melt to be expanded when it is passed through the die to form a predominantly open cell structure.

Said filter cassettes have long service lives and considerable retentate and filtrate flows. According to the invention, the overflow slit (4) consists of a retentate distancing element (3) and two retentate distancing frames (3', 3'') covering said retentate distancing element (3) on both sides in the edge area, to this end. The retentate distancing element (3) consists of an open-looped matrix (16) comprising intersecting longitudinal (17) and cross threads (18). Adjacent longitudinal (17) and cross threads (18) are separated from each other by a distance (20, 21) 5-15 times their thickness, which is from 150 to 600 νm, respectively. The retentate distancing frames (3', 3'') have a thickness (22) greater than 50 to 200 νm. The inventive cross-flow filter cassettes can be used in particular to filter fluids in the areas of pharmatechnology and biotechnology, for obtaining valuable materials, concentrating materials, separating off unwanted constituents and sterilisation.

The invention relates to a method for conducting integrity testing of filter units comprising hydrophobic filter materials by using a water intrusion test, and to a testing device for carrying out said method. According to the invention, it is sufficient to carry out a qualitative water intrusion test in order to ascertain unusable filter units, thereby making it unnecessary to carry out the entire test until completion in the instance of unusable filter units having gross defects since filter units of this type are already identified at the beginning of the test. The inventive method can be used to conduct integrity testing of filter units having a small filter surface which can be easily and routinely tested with regard to integrity in large numbers and which are required, for example, in large numbers for the ventilation of laboratory fermentors, sterilizers, lyophilizators, sterile tanks or small containers such as glass bottles or for filtering hydrophobic liquids.
